Number of Fine Gael Candidates

Why are Fine Gael running so many candidates in certain constituencies? In Galway East for example, they have 4 candidates in a 4 seat constituency, similarly in Galway West, they have 4 candidates in a 5 seat constituency, and again Laois-Offaly, 4 candidates in a 5 seat constituency.

Surely by running so many candidates they are really risking spliting their vote. A quick glance at the latest on the boards election page shows that as things currently stand, only one FG'er would be elected in each constituency (although afaik, Galway east and Laois-Offaly have not yet taken transfers into account). This from constituencies where they would have a reasonable chance of two seats in each

Now I know that the boards election page isint going to be completly consistant with how things turn out, but surely it would make more sense, and increase their chances of winning more seats if they were to only run 2 or maybe 3 candidates in such constituencies?

Two most likely to be elected for FG in GW are Healy Eames and Walsh. Various reasons for running other candidates, Sean Kyne will get a number of votes in Connemara that City based candidates may not. I don't know enough about Naughten to comment on her but that could also be raising awareness she exists for future elections.

But surely they are risking the two seats by running four candidates? Three I could understand, but four seems crazy

They don't want give away transfers to any other party, in most cases, Labour.

In Galway West they've a chance of 2 seats but things could backfire
