Engine Replacement 01 Golf 1.4

Hey my oil pump went on the motorway and by the time i got it pulled in the engine was fried. I was going 70mph and i pulled in once i saw the oil light come on but at that speed engine had done a fair bit of work without much oil. Have had a mechanic look at it to confirm it and he says it needs a new engine.

It had an oil and filter change 5 weeks ago but that's neither here nor there. Oil level was bang on the week before this happened when checked by me. 120k on car.

Question is, is it worth replacing the engine with a used one, the rest of the car is in good condition and well looked after (1.4 comfortline, alloys, a/c etc). I've been given a number of approx 1400 to 1800 to source and fit an engine. The car might be worth 2k or a bit more once fixed, is 1400 to 1800 about right? Also got an offer of eu500 from a breaker for it.

    Thanks

i would be inclined to source an engine and fit it myself but thats just me.i would imagine 1500 squids through a garage would be about right, were would the new engine be sourced from?

thanks for that, sounds like the price is about right. i got that number from the mechanic that looked at it after it was recovered, he didn't have a source of engine more of a ball park figure to help me make a call on it
I wouldn't be able to do a job like that myself so would be relying on a mechanic to fit it.

it could be hard enough find a good 1.4 engine.. they are prone to giving bother so there is a demand on them..personally i would break it myself IE sell the valuable bits off it like the (alloys 100-150 depending on size, condition and tyres) comfortline seats (100) air con compressor (100??) door locks/window regulators (40??) headlights(100) bumpers (100??) etc then get rid of the rest of it to a breakers for scrap

*im just guessing prices from what i have seen stuff selling for*

take the money you get abd what you would spend on getting a new engine fitted and buy a tdi golf

Hey sean not sure i could break myself since i don't have a driveway or anywhere to put it once it's being broken

I think i'm going to give another golf a miss :-)

Was thinking of a skoda octavia estate as a replacement, saw 1.6 petrol and 1.9tdi would appreciate any comments on either.

    cheers

Get the 1.9 TDI if you can. The 1.6 is slow, dreary and uneconomical.

1.9TDI is much more reliable. The 1.6 has the same problems as the 1.4.

the octavia is based on the golf and will have similar problems to the golf..

Stick it on donedeal. You might get 8 or 900 for it.
Another option is to get an engine fitted on the cheap. I once had an engine in a 405 fitted for 200 for an engine and 300 to fit it (pre 2000 though)
I got the engine in mullingar dismantelers and used their recommended guy who is down the road. They transported the engine to the garage. Job well done

1.4 Golf engines seem to go pop regularly. More threads on replacing these than any other engine imho.

has anyone broken a car here themselves? would need somewhere to store it off the road i guess, what happens when it's just a shell, will a scrap yard take it then, do you pay them or do they give something for the metal?
    thanks
