Hi lads I have a 03 BMW 316 1.9 petrol and lately the oil light comes on after about 650 miles cause the oil is down low. There is blue smoke coming out of exhaust when engine is cold.
The car is drove on short journeys ( 60 miles per week) as the girlfriend is on maternity leave at the minute. From this info can anyone tell me what the problem is,how much to fix it or is there an easy fix, is the breeder pipe blocked. Herself is back to work in next few weeks where she would be driving 20 miles per day, so i would be anxious to get it solved by then.
    Many thanks in advance.

If the oil level is regularly dropping and the car is puffing out blue smoke that means its definately burning oil. At the rate its burning it I'd say is prob the valve stem oil seals. You'll have to drop it into a garage to be sure but thats my guess anyway.

Any idea how much this will cost?? And what caused it as theres only 69,000 miles on it.

Ummm never heard of the valve stem seals going on these, especially at such low milage.

If it's going from high to low on the dip stick, it's using 1litre of oil, every 650 miles.

I'm not sure which engine is in these as there was an engine change around that time. The older m43 engine used to spring an oil leak from the back of the oil filter housing. The o rings go on the one way valve inside the housing. You'll see oil leaking on start up if it is this. The parts to fix are about €10 and an hours labour or so.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but my BMW has the same problem. It's a 2001 320ci with the M54 2.2L engine. Burning a litre of oil every 4-500 miles. No blue smoke. 86,000 miles.

Would appreciate any suggestions. I've heard piston rings could be a cause OP?

My problem started happening while car was under guarantee. They said it was some seal on cam box and so changed it but problem was still there. They reckon you are allowed lose a litre of oil every 1000km as stated by manufacturers tolerance so are refusing to carry out any more repairs to car.
Makes you wonder why would you by a car from garage as you get same service from a private sale.

Bmw's are renowned for burning oil because of d grade of oil in which they require (5w30) so if there is now blue smoke just keep an eye on in n make sure u use d proper oil!
