NCT Failure - Emissions and Brake Imbalance

The car is a Toyota Corolla 1994 (e10). Failed the NCT on a number of usual things (brake lines, bushing etc) all of which have been sorted. I'm fairly capable so I'm hoping to resolve the issues myself and avoid paying labor :( NCT report is as follows:

    Exhaust Emissions:

    Engine/oil temperature - 87c

    Low Idle (820rpm) - CO 0.39% vol% (PASS) - HC 391 ppm (NA)

    High Idle (2980rpm) - Lambda 1.10 (FAIL) - CO 0.68 vol% (FAIL) - HC 240ppm (FAIL)

The air filter was at least a year old and filthy. Was one of the induction kit style filters so I've changed that to the original style. Fuel FIlter has also been changed (have no idea how old but we'll assume more than 2+ )

    Brake Test:

    Front axle was grand. :)

    Rear Axle: Nearside Offside
    Brake effort 0.750kn 1.910kn
    Brake Quality 17% 29%

    Rear Brake imbalance : 61%

Got told the norm for emissions. Put in the fuel treater, run the car in 3rd gear all the way to the test centre (I live 30mins away) and remove the air filter prior to going in, Leave it running until they take it in.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Check the condition of the rear break shoes and the slave cylinder and change if necessary. Make sure there well adjusted.

    Cheap and easy enough fix

The nearside adjuster is probably seized and didn't automatically adjust the nearside shoes. But as above check the condition of the shoes and the wheel cylinders for leaks, as for your emissions it might be worth checking to make sure your exhaust has no leaks even a small leak can have a drastic effect on emissions

Cheers guys. The brake cylinder was leaking (although brake fluid wasn't going down???) so hopefully that was the cause.
Found a leak in the exhaust so fingers crossed for tomorrow :)
