We ve booked a week in the sun for the family over the Easter holidays. Should I bring my bike on aer lingus or hire there? Does anyone know of a decent hire in Tenerife? I'm guessing it might be more holiday maker type than race bike hire.

Road bike rentals can be got from an australian bloke called leslie at http://www.tenerife-training.net he is based in the north of the island but can arrange delivery and collection of the bike from your hotel. Bikes are more than adequate pro-lite and merida but make sure you get either triple or a compact cos all roads are very hilly. Was there last year and got plenty of miles in. There is plenty of info on the website linked above about routes and road conditions.

Thanks for that. I also mailed Cyclingtenerife.com who supply bikes with triples. I'd love to take my own but would want it well packed and then it gets expensive.

Bit of a thread resurrection. Travelling to south Tenerife shortly and looking to hire decent road bike with a view to tackling some those epic climbs. Anyone have any further recommendations on bike hire or good routes or areas to aim for.

    Thanks in advance.

If you a very very very strong climber then head for Mount Teide from playa de Las Americas. Its spectacular!

Best bike shop on the island is in Medano - for hire, sales and service. Nice selection of kit too.

    see www.bikepointtenerife.com

All cycling in Tenerife is very good as soon as you climb above the motorway, and up into the hills.

Best routes are up towards Villaflor, and on to Teide, where you can ride the climbs used by Sky, Radioshack, and Astana for last years Tour prep.

The roads up there are very well surfaced. Drivers are all generally Germans and very respectful of cyclists.

There is a regional road that loops around the island, that is flat, after you climb up to it via valle san lorenzo / san miguel. The surface is poor but it is flat and quiet.

If you want a thrill, head for the cliffs of Masca. There is a fantastic route along the cliff edge.

Bring some warm clothes, as it gets chilly up top.

    I hope you like climbing.

    I second these guys:

We were there last year - brought our own bikes but was in this bike shop. Looks like they have some nice rentals.

Heading to Tenerife in a few weeks and staying near Medano, will hopefully get a day out on the bike so will try out bikepoint and report back!

Great pro bike shop in Los Cristianos run by an ex team mate of Sean Kellys.
Will hire out road bikes and to buy stuff is real cheap.[duty free island]
The shop is in the main shopping area of the town.

Just a word of warning as you climb out of Adeje or pretty much any village on the inside of the motorway: it might be an idea to prepare with 1 foot clicked out unless you are good at rolling backwards

Any idea of the name of the shop? I'm heading there in April and might hire a bike out for a day or two and maybe get some cheap gear while I'm at it :D
