I remember pondering a similar idea years ago, and also if a similar type drum could be also used with a surface planer and thicknesser...

Could be ok, I don't know... Coarse sandpaper could even reduce the need for the planer blades further - maybe followed by a smoother grade if necessary...

May something similar by a major manufacturer in the future? If it's not already the case...

Maybe even a product with interchangeable metal abrasive drums - without the need for sandpaper?

A dedicated belt sander, however, might be better in certain situations...

Sorry, I don't know much more than that - but it could be worth exploring further...

    PURE MUCK.

Spend a few extra euros out and go for a Workz or Bosch sonicraft tool.

Much much better and will take one hell of a beating/serious amount of abuse too.:)

You may not be able to plane with a sonicraft tool - and it may not be suitable for sanding beyond certain parameters... It depends on what you need...

    If you need such functionality:

Maybe check out a 3" belt sander - it should be more versatile... Some of them are quite compact, and quite easy to use... You can also turn them upside down for additional sanding options... Sanding belts may also be easier to get... You could also get a matching planer... Bosch is a good brand, and have quite neat sanders and planers - and getting dedicated tools wouldn't cost much more that the planer/sander combination (I didn't see the price previously - I was looking at the tool on a different site)... You also don't have to change over from one function to another by having dedicated tools (which may be a bit precarious compared to dedicated tools)...

Bottom line: You might be better off considering dedicated tools, and from a recognised quality brand... I did find it interesting to see such a tool, though...

There are also various types of sanders for various purposes...

    Bosch sander options on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_5_12?url=search-alias%3Ddiy&field-keywords=bosch+sander&sprefix=bosch+sander

    Bosch planers on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddiy&field-keywords=bosch+planer&x=20&y=19

Amazon, for example, offer free standard shipping to Ireland for orders over STG £25... Shop around...

Be very careful with such tools, esp. a planer , and maybe wear a good pair of safety gloves... (I feel very uncomfortable suggesting tools such as planers to other people)
