Ok, so the idea is totally CRTL C CRTLV'd from Marathontalk, but the question is this. If you could do just one run, session or workout, which one would it be and why? It can be one you enjoy the most, the one that you feel gives you the biggest boost or just one that has gone well in the past.

For me, i love long tempos and my favourite one of all is 50 - 60min long alternating between marathon and threshold pace every 5 min. The changing pace keeps it really interesting and it's feels good when you know you can drop down to marathon pace as a recovery pace. I also feels it helps me develop the ability to run strongly with increasing lactic accumulation and that build mental strength. So while it's one that hurts, it's a good hurts. :-)

    Anyone else?

Here is one which completing will leave you feeling like you can take on anything (or you will never wanna run again:D). Its called The Michigan (based after the coach who implemented it at Michigan University)

warm up: 1-2 miles easy w/ 5 strides

    1 mile @ 5 k pace
    1.5 miles @ tempo pace
    1200m @ 5k pace
    1.5 mile tempo
    800m@ 5k pace
    1.5 miles tempo
400m @ all out (what ever you got left)

Session combines strength with speed and if you are a religious person will prob bring you as close to god as you will get while living:p

An undulating trailrun, about an hour and a half, along a good track, with ascents/descents up to 100m. Preferably some in a wood and some open country. No times, no intervals, no watch, just an enjoyable bit of time to switch off.

And finish at the sea on a warm day, or a pub/coffeeshop on a cold one!

I love hill sessions. It's a long time since I've done a proper one but the feeling of gasping for breath, your lungs and heart burning, not being sure if you're going to be able to lift your foot high enough off the ground in the next stride to continue climbing - getting to the top and feeling like you're going to collapse, wanting to stop, your body urging you to stop - but you continue on on the flat to recover and sure enough, 15 seconds later everything starts to settle so you turn around, jog back down and do it all all over again.

I love those sessions. Really need to start doing them again.

It would be a track session for me, when I was competitive my favourite was 5 x 1mile @ faster than 10k pace with a 400 floating recovery, they used to work out at just slightly slower than 10k pace for the full session and left you buzzing afterwards.

The 3 x 1 mile @5k pace at the end of Pfitzinger and Douglas advanced marathon training program. I have always run a PB for the mile in this session (yes, I know I shouldn't!) and repeated the PB three times. It's a real confidence booster.

In terms of a training location, I really enjoyed the IMRA Plod route the couple of times I did it, but really any run in the Dublin or Wicklow mountains.

5/6 mile tempo! Love running in that zone. Pushing but not killing!
