Heading over to Florida next month to do some hour building and was thinking of picking up a garmin 695/696 while I'm over there. Was wondering if these units are easy to change to european maps once I get back or will I be stuck with a unit that only has American maps on it?? Was'nt sure whether to put this one in the gps forum or aviation but seeing as it'll be used for flying guess here is a safe bet

    OP,
    where are you hourbuilding ?

You can drop into Lakeland and try Gulf Coast Aviation if you want to buy over there.

    http://www.gca.aero/detail/9139/GPS/GARMIN/GPSMAP-696/

Also one big thing to remember is factor in the local sales taxes, because the price you often see is the untaxed price.
You shoudl be able to get the tax back but you have to pay in the first place.

Now of course the unit will be loaded with North American maps and you will have to purchase new ones once you come back.

Not sure if you can get a discount on your next map purchase and if that has to be an update to your existing maps or can it be used in purchasing new maps ?

You need to check with Garmin.

Have you flown in Florida before ?
If not then Lakeland is right in the centre, geographically just over half way between Orlando and Tampa along I4.

BTW you have Lake Wales, Winter Haven, Bartow, Zephyrhills, Kissimmee, Sebring airports all in the area and you are never very far from one.

I am not allowed discuss …
