Haven't seen this one posted already. Was in Dundrum Town Centre earlier for a change, and O2 are giving away a free prepay phone when you switch. There was a queue of people in the shop and loads sitting at the nearby cafe opening their new phones.

Rough summary as I remember it of the deal:
Switch any other network to O2.
They give you a free Samsung Europa, Nokia X2 or I think LG C300.
Double credit (€ 20) on you first few months of top-ups.
2 free cinema tickets for the first 5 months each month.

I might have that slightly wrong but that's how I read it. I see some twitter notes on the O2 website about it too. It's Dundrum and Grafton Street only possibly. Not sure when it runs until!

:O Thats really good, might do that actually.

EDIT: Just saw this on the site, it seems to be dublin only and only in specific places, where you need to get a golden ticket...
Get a free smartphone when you move to O2 Prepay! Look out for O2 Angels in Dundrum SC and on Grafton St today to get your o2goldenticket :)

Well in Dundrum there were at least three O2 people hanging around right outside the store handing out the tickets, so it was no hassle to get them!

Bit of a slap in the face to existing customers and customers based outside of Dublin.

I understand that companies need to attract new users, but doing so at the frustration and annoyance of existing customers is a terrible way to do it. Earning loyalty of existing customers and using this for word of mouth recommendations (evangelists) would seem a more logical strategy.

Buy a prepay SIM card from another company, should only cost ya a tenner maximum.

Most are totally free if ordered online (o2 will actually give €3 cashback through fatcheese for ordering one), with VF being the only one that make it a little awkward (you need to port over a number to get the sim for free).

My comment was a more general one though, not specific to only this offer. I've lost track of how many BAs I've seen where customers have had to port away and port back to avail of an offer. It just seems a little baffling, with this being the latest in a very long line of similar offers.

Not really, its always been the way that new customers get the best deals
to entice them to join up.
if they can steal a customer away from thier competitors then thats even
    better.
If you are an existing customer then they are already getting your business
and money so dont need to work as hard. Makes perfect sense.
The amount of existing customers that are going to leave because of it is
    going to be very few.

I spotted this on their Facebook page this morning
Missed it on Saturday as I am in Mullingar and they choose to do all their promoting in Dublin, so I decided to head to Dublin to grab myself a bargain.

Arrived at main shop on Henry Street to be met in the doorway by 2 O2 employees who were mumbling different replies when I asked about the golden tickets. Then eventually, they both said there were none left and they had all been given away and that it was done at some college??? My wife then explained that we had travelled up for the offer and would there be any more, as the post said until 6pm (This was about 3.30)

They said there would be no more and then wanted to know where we heard about it. I explained that I had read it on Twitter or Facebook but couldnt find it to show them, so they said ah that was Saturday, you're mistaken!!!!! I insisted it was there earlier but they weren't listening. At this stage my wife had words with one of them who stated she was actually from O2 marketing and she said if we would like to step inside, leave our details, that O2 would contact us at some stage to arrange something. When we asked what exactly, she said "Oh I can't really say, but I'm sure we can sort something", to which my wife replied that it was ok, that she didn't believe a word she was saying, and thanks but no thanks!

Totally disgusted at the whole episode, I then found this thread that confirmed that they had in fact advertised it on Facebook this morning and then pulled the post from Facebook and the shop totally denied it ever went up when we told them about it and told us we must be mistaken

I really have had my fill of O2 lately. I was always a strong O2 supporter and even a "fanboy" at one stage, but I don't know who is in control or what's going on, but I for one am delighted to see them haemorrhaging customers. Its about time people started to vote with their feet!
