Best to get a specific triathlon wet suit, these are designed for swimming, less resistance in the arm/shoulder region and they will also provide some buoyancy in the legs. Lakes are nice to swim in, but at this time of yr, they will be very cold. I swim in the lakes in Killarney and we only go back in late April.

If you are going into the lake, make sure the lake is safe to swim in. You have safe entry and exist points and there is nothing dangerous under the water!!
The MOST importance piece of advise, DO NOT SWIM ON YOUR OWN.

Are you near Galway city? There is a good bit of sea swimming going on in that area.

Any triathlon shop would stock them. You can also get them online,

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/swim/wetsuits/
    http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/showsearchresults.asp?idCategory=75&order=3

Be careful buying online, the fit is very important.
Price wise, as you can see, they range from €100 - €500
I have an Orca and find it very good.

    Howdy,

Just to note that freshwater lakes can be very cold (< 10 deg C) this time of year and even with the best wetsuit gear on you will be struggling to keep warm and probably spend most of your time hyperventilating (gasping for breathe with the cold).

The sea would be a bit warmer (10-12 deg C) but even with a good triathlon suit on it would still be cold. This is of course presuming you are not a channel swimmer in training ;)

If you have a pool near you it's a much better option and much safer. Once May/June comes around the lakes and sea warm up significantly and it's much more comfortable swimming in them, plus you'll be fitter from all the pool swimming in the winter.

As the other poster noted, safety should be your priority when open water swimming.

    Enjoy...
