IMO it is the exact same thing as belief. "If you see it you can believe it."

People talk about confidence in many matters; Sports, Relationships, Careers. IMO seperating the 2 worlds just confuses people. It is all about faith in yourself.

Yeah, I'd saying having confidence in something means you've faith in it. Often that's blind faith bordering on delusion, but that seems to be 'confidence'.

A misplaced faith in oneself or too much faith in oneself would be arrogance.

    Its a fine line.

    no its not

being outwardly and overly confident i would say is arrogance

nobody needs to be told how confident you are or arent, your actions will show that. you could be the most confident person in the world, if you dont talk about it or boast about it or put other people down about it your still not arrogant

I would say it's being able to do things in life without being duly held back by doubts etc. As in the confidence to do something, not being afraid (or not so afraid that you don't try). So it can be a sort of 'ballsy'-ness, having a 'thick neck', but I also think a person can have a quiet confidence (rather than an in-your-face type).

Confidence is approaching a girl in a bar with a whitty chat up line.

Belief is knowing its not gonna work and she is gonna tell you to fcuk off..

To me arrogance is an inflated sense of importance about oneself. I think someone can be both very confident and humble.

yeah, you're right. sorry, I meant being confident to the degree that you have to flaunt your abilities/personality in everybody's face or, as pointed out, an inflated sense of self-worth.

a humble self-assuredness, on the other hand, is very attractive in a person.

Hmmm...I still don't know what confidence is. Cause, you could have great self belief and be absolutely sh*t/dangerous in what you are doing.

"Booo-di-doooo...I'm such a confident driver....dooo-dee-doooo...oh hello Mr Brick Wall!"

Confidence is not having to seek encouragement from others.

Arrogance is not knowing your limitations

Well thats true but the birth of confidence would be getting encouragent from others ensuring you never have to seek it!

I kind of wish outward displays of confidence weren't perceived as arrogance. I think it's to do with our love of begrudgery. Nobody says they are good at something until they are completely sure they won't fail becuase then the sniggering would commence. It would be a lot better if people who had a go were looked up to. I've never quite gotten it. Quiet self-belief is good, but outward self-belief is bad. Why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭liah

Confidence is genuinely not caring what anyone else thinks and just doing what makes you happy.

It's not rubbing your accomplishments in everyone's face, nor is it about putting other people down. It's just about being happy doing your own thing.

confident people dont have to show their confident. people who demonstrate they're confident usually arent

yeah, the line between confidence and arrogance has blurred in the last 30ish years, (imo) due to the americanisation of society i think..confidence is now seen as the norm, and has changed into arrogance on many levels i think..

I'm not saying it's necessary to display confidence. I'm just wondering why is it unnecessary? There's this automatic assumption that it is bad, I just want to know why? What harm does it do?

That's an example of incompetence and unjustified confidence. I talking about where somebody says "I'm good at X and I'm going to succeed at it" and is right.

No, that's hubris. Arrogance is an offensive or overbearing attitude towards others.

The ability to negotiate social situations without undue fear of consequence, and also not to negatively personalize that consequence.
