It's an error in 3.56, and has since been corrected with a rereleased version. Reupdate to 3.56 with a newly downloaded one & you will be ok.

Really? I read a report a few days ago that the error has been corrected, & 3.56 has been reissued with the correction. I'll look into it now & see whats up.

There's defnitely plenty of reports of the same issue, but quite a few sites reporting 3.56v2 was silently released so as not to make a big deal out if it. Here's one report - http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/02/sony-to-release-3-56v2/#axzz1DlKgMn93

Dukio, PS3news & psxscene all have similar reports. As far as I know PS3 firmware isn't region specific, so maybe try get it from the US servers?

I think its working... Well I got one further step. Its formatting the new drive.

I had to install the 3.56v2 firmware on my old HD it seems...

How did you fix it in the end? Install 3.56v2 on the old hdd, & then upgrade? And where did you get the revised 3.56?

The problem I was having was that when I downloaded the new firmware 3.56v2 to a flash drive to update the New hard drive I was getting the corruption error.

To fix this I downloaded the firmware again from the us ps site (not sure if the site made a difference, it didn't mention anything about a revised version) and installed it on my old hard drive. I then put in my new hard drive and it then found the firmware on the flashdrive and allowed me to format the drive and install the firmware.

So the old hard drive has to have the 3.56v2 update before you remove it.

    3.56 iz a virus !!
Sony’s attempt to combat PS3 hackers with the release of 3.56 turned out to be ugly again, just like the OtherOS removal case last year which angered a lot of users.

A number of members in PlayStation community forum has expressed their disappointment and discontent with the latest update that Sony has brought to their now hackable console as a lot of users who are using a new hard drive for their PS3 had their system broken down. This is an email sent by one of the members to the attorneys:

I am interested in possibly putting together a class action lawsuit against Sony. The situation seems to fit the criteria of class action lawsuit example shown in business law lectures, so I’m hoping you can take a look at the problem and offer a recommendation, or if you find it worth of your talent, participation in this project. This has been affecting people in multiple countries and may be very lucrative. Here’s the situation.

Sony requires mandatory installation of system updates its Playstation 3 game system. These updates add and remove key features from the system, while also patching issues with certain games. If you refuse to download and install these updates, you can’t sign in to your Playstation and/or play games (the system’s primary feature).

Another key feature for the Playstation 3 is the ability to install any laptop hard drive into your system and use it as a storage device. For example, if you buy a Playstation 3 (PS3) with a 40gb hard drive instead of the more expensive 160gb equipped PS3, you can later on get any laptop hard drive and in 3 easy steps replace the 40gb with a much larger one. Not only does Sony support this hard drive upgrade, there are even instructions for this procedure in the Playstation 3 owner’s manual.

Recently hackers have found a way to circumvent the PS3′s software protection, enabling them to create their own software and software updates without Sony knowledge or consent. This could possibly lead to a flood of unauthorized software to make their way into Playstations around the world. To combat this, Sony released update 3.56 on January 27, 2011. This update didn’t add consumer functionality to the system, but instead was advertised as a mandatory “security update”. Unfortunately, if you were one of millions of people that were upgrading your hard drive around this time, the 3.56 update would effectively corrupt your system’s software so that it wouldn’t even start, i.e. a virus. Sony released 3.56 version 2 on February 2, 2011, which if you still have access to the original hard drive that you used before the upgrade, may be a means to get your system working again. However, if you no longer had the previous hard drive because it is no longer working or you had to erase it to use it for storage space, there was nothing you could do.

A call to Playstation support would be fruitless. The tech support and supervisors would spend hours denying that the issues exist, and that it must have been user error that caused the problem. These calls typically end with Sony’s representative offering to fix the damage that their own virus caused for over $100 per system affected. Here is one of many sony forums with nearly 600 posts of users affected throughout the world:

    http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Technical-Support-Help-Advice/System-Update-3-56-Data-Corrupted-after-Swap-HDD/td-p/12309619

Playstation 3 owners have spent up to $670 for just the system itself, up to $67 per game disc, and up to $30 dollars per downloadable game (which was stored on the hard drive that Sony corrupted with their virus). We have invested a great deal into Sony’s products, and due to their error/virus, our investment was destroyed callously and without warning. It has been exactly 2 weeks today that Sony has not addressed those affected by their actions and have profited with repair cost and new system sales due to this air of uncertainty. There are hundreds of affected users willing to sign a petition for a class action suit, and we could even setup an online petition on Facebook to reach more. I am currently contacting the appropriate websites to bring more awareness to this issue. Any recommendation or assistance would be awesome.

Well I guess by definition then yes, but an accidental one at that. Maybe Waninkoko works on the firmware team? :D

There should be no cost to a customer for this error though, bad form indeed.

Wasted time messing about with faied updates, buying a new drive that you can't use, possible lost saves if the old drive has been formatted, check the link in the above to the Sony forums for sixty seven pages worth of 'cost'. It doesn't have to be money Varik, dreadful form again by Sony.

    right lads,

Im having the same sort of problem, i have upgraded my HDD from 40GB to 320GB about a year ago. everything going grand.

I want to upgrade my PS3 to a slimline version, Game are doing a good trade in deal. I planned to trade in my old PS3 with the original 40GB, and stick my 320GB HDD into the new system.

Problem, Ive put my old 40GB HDD back in and the PS3 wont start without 3.56. i downloaded this from EU playstation, and im getting the same corrupt data error mentioned earlier in this thread.

I rang customer support, and to be fair the lad was very helpful, first thing he said was " i thought we got this issue sorted last week."
with his help i started the system in recovery mode, formatted the 40GB HDD and then tried installing the 3.56 from EU again , but with the same result, he suggested downloading form a different ISP, but that's not really practicable.

I would be keen to know if the US version will solve this.

You can download the us version here - http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/.

Download it to a flashdrive, set up the flashdrive as it says on the webpage. First install this firmware you download from the link above to your 320gb new hd - do this by going to settings and clicking system update and select external sources or whatever it says. Then put your old 40gb in and connect the flashdrive again to the PS3. It should ask you to press select or something to install the firmware from the flashdrive.

This is the way I solved my problem which is similar but sort of the opposite if that doesn't work I don't know what you could do. :(

Peadar make sure you back up your game saves to an exteral hdd, i traded in the same as you thinking i could just swap my hdd into my new slim, but when u put ur 320gb into the slim itll format it, losing all your saves, lost all my demon souls/res evil and red faction online stats took about 200 hours to replay it all.:(

Thanks for the heads up tony, jes i didn't figure on that. i might just hold off on the old trade in for a while then, no harm in backing up the system though.

How can you back it up now?
You took the 320GB HDD out when you put in the 40GB one.

The 320 gb hasnt been formatted so will still work with his old system. Ps3's and hdd's are linked some way, change ps3 and the hdd will need to be formatted(delete old link) to suit its new ps3 (create new link)

    yeah,

Ive just removed my 320GB, Ive put it back in and everything is functioning.

Do i need 320GB of free space to back up the 320GB HDD, or is it somehow compressed?

You don't need 320GB of space, when I backed up my PS3, I used my Ipod and it was only about 20GB at the time.
You just need enough space for what you need to back up.

As fingers stated, an ipod is the best solution, delete anything that can be reinstalled, ie Large game data files like gt4. Whatever space your taking up on the ps3 system youll need in the external device.
