Hey, I've come to the conclusion that I have some problems that really need attention, and that I am unable to fix them on my own.

I think I would like to talk to a Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist. I want to know though, are these things regulated here in Ireland? I tried doing some searches but couldn't find anything conclusive. I'm a skeptic at heart and I worry that I will waste my time and money on quackery.

What is considered the most modern, scientifically supported mental health profession in Ireland?
I have to go to my GP first I understand before I will be referred to a mental specialist, what will they refer me too? A Psychiatrist?

I'm sorry for the absolute jumble of questions I just asked, I'm just overwhelmed at all the different types of therapist and worry that half of them are pants and a waste of time.
    Thanks

A Psychotherapist is a paid regulated profession, but they cannot provide you with medical help.

You can find professional Psychotherapist across ireland.

You will have to pay to see a psychotherapist (though the cost is deductible) the quality is variable and there are different specialists in different fields so research is the key. A medical doctor recently contacted me to suggest a councillor who helped her cope with a specific piece of personal trauma. So they can help

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialised in mental health. In order to see a psychiatrist you will need to be referred to see them by your GP. It will be free like any consultation. But it may take months coming about. A Psychiatrist can prescribe drugs like anti depressants. And further therapy.
