Edge or 3G

Which is better? I always find my phone on the edge when out of wifi, is the 3G faster, if so how do I get my phone to connect automatically to it?

3G is faster.
If you have "Enable 3G" set on in Settings > General > Network, then once you are within 3G coverage it should automatically switch over.

The 3G is also a factor in the battery line. You get a better battery if on Edge/gprs
