K so need fairly quick answer on this so i'm hoping for a half serious thread in AH!

So this guy came to the door when i was at work yesterday and the GF answered and there was a lad at the door selling them for 40 quid. I'm not sure if it was dioxide or monoxide (i'm assuming the latter). he was selling them for 40 quid and told her that in a few years every home would require one by law.

Now i haven't heard anything like that in the news or anything so i thought con man but then the GF told me he said you could get them a tenner cheaper in Argos.

She told him to call back today so i could talk to him so i'm asking you boardsies is this guy for real with his sceal or is he the dumbest conman ever?

They may be requirement to be provided by landlords in rental properties and/or public buildings but that would be the extent of it. Anything more would be absurd and unworkable.

Asda Up here are doing the electronic ones for £10 STG. The cardboard strip yokes are sometimes given away free.

Cheers for the replies, kinda figured it was a bit strange esp if he was saying they were going to be mandatory in few years.

if i had a gasmask i'd answer the door to him wearing it!

Tell him you won't buy one until you see it in action, detecting carbon monoxide.

Not required by law at the moment but it may be likely they will be phased in like smoke alarms where they will be required in all new builds and in rental accommodation.

And they do indeed range in the price. I've seen them in Tesco and Woodies in Dublin. And it is a corbon monoxide detector :)

Smoke alarms are a regulation have been required by law in every house built within the last 10 years at least, if you didnt have 1 you get no electricty, and that guy is rite carbon monoxide alarms will also be regulation and required by law in all newly built houses and thats within the next 6 to 12 months.

Same all rental propertys and public building will be required to have them.

Couldn't be carbon dioxide, you'd set it off every time you breathed out! :P

No, they're not required by law (as far as I know) - they're probably a good idea, but I wouldn't buy one off a randomer!

This is something you need to buy - but not from some guy who calls to your door. Dont even consider whether its law or not. They are not yet required but very soon new builds will have them by law.
Anything that burns fuel with oxygen can creat this gas if the conditions present themselves. This could be a restricted chimney etc. If you have a gas or oil burner internally, buy one immediately

Carbon Dioxide monitors are required in commercial premises under Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 for the protection of staff where compressed carbon dioxide cylinders are used in confined spaces.

There is no reason for a Carbon Dioxide monitor to be used in your home, unless you are using a large gas bottle to power a soda stream, or you have a home bar.

they are if you live in an apartment block or new house built within the last 10 years as pointed out above

carbon monoxide is the one the kills people. NO they are not required by law for residential premises. They are required in industrial / commercial premises where there is naked flames or fuel burners are (welders, blow torches, bunsens burners etc)
