I am not sure if this should be in Consumer Issues, But lately I have noticed price hikes in a few of my staple items at my local tesco.

It has really got my goat, it isnt just a few cents but prices rises of 10c and 45c, and a lot of these are own brands.

In this current climate how the hell can they justify it. I think I am going to have to become one of those people that writes angry letters. I have stopped buying these items.

Has anyone else noticed a rise in prices lately?

Get used to it, all commodities are on the rise, from oil to wheat. The global recession put a bit of a halt to rising food and energy prices for the past year but as the global economy pulls out of this, prices are rising dramatically again.

    http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/

Expect to see more food riots across the world in the coming year.

Commodity 1 Month Change 12 Month Change Year to Date Change
    Commodity Agricultural Raw Materials Index 4.71 % 38.86 % 0.00 %
    Commodity Beverage Price Index 6.82 % 18.25 % 0.00 %
    Commodity Price Index 6.65 % 27.67 % 0.00 %
    Commodity Fuel (energy) Index 3.94 % 20.35 % 0.00 %

One pack of biscuits that I buy in Tesco's rose from 69c to 99c at the new year. I noticed because they are my favourite biscuits.

Tesco's are constantly messing with their prices though. I decided last week not to use them anymore. Go to Dunnes & Aldi etc

It was rising food prices that was a contributing factor in the recent unrest in Tunisia, you don't see many iphones in developing nations where a massive proportion of a persons income goes on food.

Yeah I noticed that a while ago. They do offer a slightly different set of choices to Dunnes, but the extra cost hasn't been worth it for a year or so.

Tesco own brand butter-like-spread went from 85c to 1.20 just after Christmas.

Tea from 1.65-1.99; cat food from 2.89 to 3.99; washing tablets from 3.29-4.45...... over the last 6 months.

Ive noticed they arent comparing prices with other local shops any more they are now comparing with leading brands in the shelf edge labels.

I got my work hours seriously cut recently. This leaves me with extra time to shop around. Used only shop in Tesco, now Dunnes and a local Galway supermarket get a look in. The money stretches so far, farther than it did when I got more. There are bargains to be had, just might not suit alot of people to visit various shops.

The tomatoes need fertilizer (made from oli) to grow them and oil to transport them, the base is made from wheat and the cows are fed on grass that needs fertilizer. All raw materials are on the rise.

The only way I can see to check this is a massive increase in GM foods but the hippies wont allow that.

4 Pack red bull went from 4.99 to 5.99 in all the shops I've been to. No more red bull for me. Having serious withdrawal symptoms.

Coffee? If not, get some ALDI Red Thunder. It's the closest out will get to red bull.

I live off of the Diet Red Thunder, explosade!, 6 cans for 1.99!
One can of Tesco equivalent is now 79c it was 45c and the diet version was 79c!

What really gets up my nose, as well as the noses of my contemporaries in college is the increases in the price of deli food in the centra across the road from college, as well as everywhere else.

Was 4 sausage rolls for €1 but is now 3 for a €1... SCANDALOUS!! Same with chicken fillet rolls.

Oh.. and Dublin Bus fares going up too :(

It's good stuff alright. Great price for consumers too. Tesco KX is piss imo. Tastes very rough. The stuff contains carrots too, which is a bit mank. I have to say, ALDI is fairly good quality if you disregard the brand names. Higher than tesco branded stuff without a doubt.

This is why I don't really understand when people are saying the cost of living is dropping so wages should too. Where exactly is it dropping?

Mm, stagflation -the fast track to becoming a third world country. They used to call it the Misery Index in the US.

Customers ultimately set the prices, Tesco will set their prices at the highest price possible as long as customers keep buying

...and none of the other shops do? They're all taking us for suckers.

The Irish-owned stores were all taking shoppers for suckers decades before Tesco showed up.

I noticed that too. Tesco's own brand stuff used to be cheaper that Dunnes own brand. But it's changed now with Tesco's new prices. Both the branded and the own branded stuff is now much cheaper in Dunnes. I do all my shopping in Dunnes and Lidl's now.

Dunnes have an 8pack for €9.99

You'll find that most supermarkets raise their prices before they have a range of special offers on. If you ever shop in Dunnes and notice that the prices are pretty high then you know that they're going to have a 20% cashback on their clubcard in the near future.

If you have the time it really does pay to shop around.

In my local Centra, they only sell those sausage rolls in groups of 6 now. It's 6 for €2. What's the point in that? There's no way I'd eat 6 of them so I've stopped buying them. About 2 or 3 is the most I'll eat so the others would go to waste. I used to buy them when I didn't have enough time to have breakfast in the morning and I'll heat them up in the microwave at work. Delicious!

i much prefer dunnes these days. they have so many deals too. tesco do deals but they are so often on products we dont actually have to have but we tend to buy cos theyre on special. other supermarkets have stuff like that but the ratio of stuff we NEED is bigger.
my biggest gripe is cat food - at the mo - was in tesco on thurs and was gobsmacked to see their own brand cat food was 10 cents dearer than dunnes own brand. i already feel 3.99 for dunnes sachet cat food is too much when not long ago it was 3.18 or thereabouts. so in tesco it was abnout 4.10. in dunnes you often get 2 boxes or 7 or 8 too. my cats only eat sachets and theyre picky feckers thats why ive noticed the cat food conspiracy (j/k)

Tescos prices are up and down like a hoor's knickers ever since the "change for good campaign". I never go there with a shopping list, I just get whats on offer, you can check online before you head out. Since I have no real brand loyalty, and am not too fussy and eater/consumer I still get my shopping dirt cheap.

Its almost like you people have note heard of Aldi and Lidl - are you all Southsiders or something ?

    Anyhow cheap as chips people

My point is we need to shop around a lot more and force the shops to lower prices. Irish owned stores are like all stores!

Seriously if I was a billionaire I'd still shopin lidi/aldi

It's flipping ridic when assholes say the cost of living has gone down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,571 ✭✭✭Aoifey!

Yeah, everyone seems to think they're the cheapest thing going but they're far from it. And personally I don't think their own brand stuff is that nice at all, I much prefer Super Valu (not that they're always the best value either, just what i grew up with).

I shop around, drives the hubby mental ... I use Lidl, Aldi, Tesco and Dunnes. Although I have to say the service in Dunnes is shocking, whichever of my local 3 I go to the queues are ridiculous ended up walking out this evening, 8 people ahead of me..!!!

Trying Lidls own butter this week as its cheaper than Tesco own.... waiting to see if kids notice! (yes I know the packaging is different Im talking about taste!)

lidl and aldi food tastes weird although aldi is much better quailty than lidl i think

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Aishae

lidl and aldi are good for some things. some things just taste too diff though. over processed maybe. dont like their fruit and the cat food doesnt go down well with my picky gits. the dogs love the chubes you get there though so we always get them. problem for me is theyre all too far from a bus near me. i dont drive. theres one in town i think... but its still about a 20 min walk from the luas (for me) - otherwise id use it more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,625 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

I think Aldi is not cheap. The only thing I buy there is bin bags, tinfoil and cheese. Lidl is cheaper but I have tried so many things that turned out to be disgusting that I only but the bear minimum.

I buy a good bit of vegetarian stuff in Tesco because our Dunnes and Super Value only caters for my 'meat and 2 veg' mother.

I have noticed stuff increasing in Tesco and Aldi since 4.01.11 and only 1 item in Dunnes.

Aptimal baby milk was €10.49 on 25.12.10
    then it went to €10.79
then Dunnes and Superquinn upped to to €10.79
    Now in Tesco its €11.54!

It's still €10.49 in Boots..... no change.
