UPC DVR - Missing the end of programs

    Hi ,

I have the UPC silver DVR box and have it set to record 5 minutes before and after recording but still seem to end up missing the end of some programs . There is a lot of recording in my house so any more than 5 minutes either side can lead to conflicts with other recordings .

Now this is maybe a discussion for a different forum but I remember about 20 years ago having a a video recorder and there was some kinda signaly thingy ( that is the technical term I swear ) talked about that would be sent down the cable and tell the recorder to wait if the program was going to be late starting . ( my wife remembers this is well so atleast if I am mad then the two of us are )

So are we 20 years on and still have recorders working of clock time for recording programs ?
Do I bite the bullet and set it to 10 minutes either side ?

    You weren't dreaming ...

I've no idea if something equivalent to it exists for the brave new digital world, although you'd imagine so, wouldn't you? Especially as TV controllers these days seem to start scheduled programs whenever they feel like it resulting in either early starts or late finishes.

I'm guessing the problem is UPC change their schedule, but don't adjust it on the DVR's.

We used to have a VHS recorder with PDC but it only worked on some channels, (the UK ones) and you could have only a few things set to tape, rather than unlimited with the regular clock timer. As a result we never used it.

Sky seems doesn't seem to have as many complaining about this.

It's the channels themselves that change their schedules, or overrun not UPC. UPC presumably get their EPG from a 3rd party, who then get their info from BBC, UTV etc. so if they don't update their info, then UPC can't update it either.

    Don't they?

I don't have either sky or the upc dvr box. I was only going by what I read on boards.

That link is from 2007 btw...

I remenber when PDC was fisrt intoduced, I was training in TV up in Belfast at the time. It was being promo'ed as the 'be all and end all' "no more missed recordings blah blah"!
As it transpired later it was a bit of a flop, the independant channels dropped it first, the BBC tried to percivere for a while but in the end they gave it up as well.

The digital equivalent as far as I'm aware (don't work in the trade anymore) is controled by the broadcaster. So if a programme such as live sports or an 'exciting (sic) election special' runs over it's allocated time slot, in theory the broadcaster should dalay the 'start signal' for the delayed programme.
But as we know from experience this doesn't always work according to plan.

Not sure whither this also applies to cable, we never had any cable training/experience up here in 'the north' Probably less than 2% of all households up here are cabled.
