Dublin Bus Advertisements

Something that strikes me, and this is just a passing thought, is that there is very little in the form of advertising for third parties done on Dublin Buses, when compared with Iarnród Éireann for example. You see the odd poster space, but they aren't even always occupied and where they are they're few and far between. Even on the outside of the buses, there are no advertisements on some buses even though the space is there for them. And the last time I saw a full rear ad on a bus was months ago.

Is it a policy of BAC to keep their buses ad-free? I can understand that on the outside of buses they might want uniformity but on the inside, if anything if gives you something to look at rather than grey walls. I can't ehelp but think they're missing out on a potentially huge revenue stream...and if they monopolised on it, then maybe they wouldn't have to increase fares like they have this week?

    Thoughts?

Dublin Bus mainly do external advertising. People see the buses around a lot and often make short journeys. There are always at least three external ad frames on a bus, unless they have a full ad back or an all-over wrap.

You spend longer on a train and they're out of sight a lot, hence the internal.

Anyway, the lack of ads is because there is nobody looking to use them. All those spots are for sale via Bravo. That would include the above-window space like on the trains.

Here's a current list of "mega rear" adverts on the Dublin Bus fleet.

I haven't seen an all over ad on a DB vehicle for many years though. I remember the KDs with Coca Cola wrapped all around them. :)

The advertising industry has been devastated by the recession.

Dublin bus have banned AOA,s (All over advertising) on its buses. There are currently a lot of buses with Megarears floating around. AFAIK Bravo have the contract for Dublin Bus.

I do actually kind of agree with that, it looks a bit silly.

What I'm really suprised by is the lack of internal ads though. They're small (like on a train) and one would think relatively inexpensive depending how many buses/ads per bus you wanted. I know they used to do stickers like the Luas at one stage, which were generally one ad through the whole cabin, but it's been a long time since there were buses whose interior was anywhere near as covered in ads as the trains are.

The older RV type buses carried internal ads in frames which looked fine. The newer buses use stickers AFAIK, in my opinion this looks tacky. Some buses in the uk are now using digital internal advertising. Some Dublin buses on Airlink services are using similar models. Dublin Bus did try advertising spaces on each side of the main destination display but it did not catch on. Cadburys astros iirc.

I've seen a Conyngham Road AV which still has remnants of the Vodafone Mobile TV advert from 2006/07 stuck downstairs. There's also some AXs out there with Ryder Cup ads still stuck inside.

Those AX's seem to turn up on 67Ns disproportionately. Are they the oldest EU unsubsidised ones or something?

I think some controversy over a Heineken festival ad AOA was when DB stopped using them. They definitely had a EU one for the presidency in 2004 as a latest date anyways...

They are Conyngham Road's AX520-525, maybe AX517-519 too, they were buses that operated the Ryder Cup Shuttle I think. AX521 also doesn't have its Transport 21 logo or the NDP logo over the door either.

Dublin bus have sold a lot of their RV RA and RH type buses. Some of these are now operating with Irish operators hence the confusion. Currently there is a few ex Dublin buses knocking about with AOA,s.
