    Hi there,

Basically with the cold snap and the water being switched on and off in my apartment, one of my toilet cysterns won't fill up on it's own anymore. I believe the ballcock may need to be replaced (not a clue, but that's what I've been told is wrong)
What is the normal going rate for such a job- and does it take long???

    thanks

if the problem is just the ballcock and the water is easy to turn off he will prob just charge you for the callout , the ballcock can proably be cleaned out and reused , €50 is what a lot charge for a basic problem like that assuming nothing else pops up . would take half hour or less if everything is straight forward turning on and off water etc

Its also possible its just an airlock. Have you tried to back feed it?

I haven't checked for an airlock and I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it- but I'm not afraid to learn new skills.. In my house, I'm the one who changes fuses and uses drills etc-I'd like to think I could get it working without having to call in a professional for such a small job... In fact, now that I think about it, there was a small problem with our boiler a few weeks ago that was diagnosed as an airlock so you could be onto something...
How do I go about it?

First determine if it is an air lock. On the actual valve you think may be broken there are two plastic nuts, usually, on either side of the little plastic tap. Loosen the nut on the side nearest the incoming supply pipe (If you're confused as to which one just do both). You can usually loosen this by hand but you only need to loosen it a little bit (1/2 to 3/4 of a turn)- too much and you'll get a nice cold shower. If you get water leaking out when its loosened then its not air locked.
