Hi, i bought toys from online website in hong kong.

Shipping was included in price so it was shipping was labeled as 'free shipping'

The cost was 34 $ which is 25€

    As of now tracking says
    ITEM RECEIVED

    11-Feb-11

    DUBLIN MAIL CENTRE DUBLIN 12

Will i have to pay vat on the toys?

I saw a post on here which said
3.Consignments not exceeding a total value of €45 may be imported without payment of customs duty and VAT. Further information available in Public Notice No. 1882 (http://www.revenue.ie/leaflets/pn1882.htm)

But is that only for gifts?

    Thanks

It is possible that you could be charged 21% VAT on them. You can buy goods to the value of €22 without any VAT charges, and a gift to the value of €45 before you get stung. It's unlikely that they would bother with a small amount in this case.

But, expect to be charged on it, if you don't, that is a bonus in my book.

Thanks alot. Is it true an post can charge up to 15 euro for the 'handling' or something got to do with customs.

If true i have to pay upto 15 euro and vat which which will be 5.25.

If they charge 15 euro that will be 20.25, which is more than 3 quaters the amount of the actual products i bought :/

It was a €5 charge last year. Might have gone up a little bit since, but not €15.
Having said all that, i would be very suprised if the customs bothered with an item that was slightly over the €22 limit. All that paperwork to gain a fiver in tax. Jeeeesh.......

If you bought it, then it's not a gift.

This is all covered in the sticky at the top of the forum.
