Wave Starts taken to extreme?

I am on a few mailing lists for online stores I have bought from (need to use that unsubscribe button more often) so I get a load of stuff on races in England.

I saw this one. A half marathon "Race your Pace" two and a half hours between the start of the "performers" race and the "improver" race.

Waved starts gone mad? kill off the atmosphere at a race?
One of the attractions stated for open road races is that you race with the elites no mater what your level (not many sports give that opportunity)

Next we will have the 'clydesdale' races etc.. over here. I blame the Americans ;)

Same as NYC Marathon. Waves are every 45 minutes if I remember correctly, but there were enough people to make a number of individual Dublin-sized marathons, so you wouldn't notice. But that half marathon sounds awful.

This one is a 4 lap race, so it looks to be just to avoid people lapping each other/slower groups holding up people lapping them.

Yep, been there to see a triathlon and there wouldn't be much space for any decent sized half marathon field to spread out along the paths around the rowing lake there.
