I recently got a car, rang up today to book the n.c.t. and the lady tells me that because the last n.c.t. ran out in november 09 that my new nct is only good till nov 11. So i'm paying full whack for only 9 months nct. Is this right,if it is it doesn't seem fair that i'm punished for the previous owners lapse.

Ya, my old car NCT ran out for 6 months and when i finally got a booking it was 2 years from the date it should have been done, so effectively i only got 1.5 years out of it.

Its nothing short of a money racket! Theres no other explaination for it.

If you paid a fair price for a car that's been without NCT for a year and a bit, whats the harm?

never thought of it that way before i went off on one. the bitch is that the car is now ten year old so with the new rules in june i'll be only getting a year in november also

you could wait another 2/3 weeks, take a chance, then book it on for 2 months time and your legit.

id be shocked if they handed down a 5k fine.

    *awaits the high horses*

Not wishing to be a high horsie, but what you are recommending is that the OP deliberately drives their car without NCT and that is an offence. In short, your encouraging the breaking of the law.

Just be careful what you recommend.......;)

true that i suppose, but i never suggested they had to drive it, park it up 2-3 weeks, then book it in, then drive it.

by the sounds of the OP this is the first car they have purchased so another week or two without a car wont kill them.

also by the sounds of the OP they've already been driving without n.c.t. so i dont think they would be too phased by continuing to do so, which i hardly see as my fault :P

your best bet if your concerned then is to phone for a cancellation, i got one for the next day when mine was due.

Considering the car, I'd also check out when (or if) the timing belt, tensioners and waterpump(maybe) were done, and when they are due next. The intervals on FIATs are usually shorter than average and people do get caught out...

It's not an NCT fail, but its something you don't wanna get get caught out on. There is a mileage AND a time interval to change them at. Every 30-35 thousand miles is the figure in my head, dunno what the time interval is, but a 01 could well be on or due it's third timing kit by now...

i have a mechanic friend who gave it a good service tuesday and also changed the timing belt. as you allude to better safe than sorry

Five points and up to €1,500 fine on conviction. There is no soft fixed penalty option.
