Should Ireland rejoin the Commonwealth?

Should Ireland rejoin the former British Empire collection of Nations known as the Commonwealth?

Would we have anything to lose? We do have alot in common with Zimababwe and Nigeria in terms of corruption and insolvency. Maybe we could learn from these countries? And then there are countries like Australia and Canada - very popular with emigrants. It might be helpful for them? It might also satisy the Irish people's traditional soft spot for the Monarchy in Britain and help further integration with the North.

Or we could just say no for lots of reasons over the last 900 years. But should we not be looking to the future instead of the past? Myself I think we are in enough global talking shops already and don't really need another excuse for junkets.

This is going to come up officially when her Majesty visits.

This was brought up in the Dail before, by Eamon Ó Cuiv of all people. Needless to say it wasn't very well supported.

You don't really understand what the Commonwealth is/does, do you?

900 years? I know I had a few too many Saturday night, but I didn't think I lost 100 years.

It is for countries with an old fidelity to the British Empire - a sort of (useless) legacy organisation of which the Monach is head. I know exactly what it does in practice. But it is so little it hardly merits mentioning.

Do people start these sort of topics just give republican/unionist/and everyone in between an excuse to spend the afternoon arguing about nationism/the Ira and the famine??

I don't see the point to be honest!

We had a monster thread like this I thin last year or the year before, I remember. I'm still wearing the scars from that battle. But i'm prepared to go at it again, if this thread should turn nasty.

But in answer to the OP, no we should not join the Commonwealth

No, and before someone spites on sh!te about Unionists suddenly consenting to a UI or thinking that them paddies are a great bunch of lads if we join the commonwealth, it wont, simple as.

    Hello OP.
I realise you might not have been around for a while but this thread has cropped up many times very recently and the end result has always been something inconclusive involving pitchforks and bans.
So lets not revisit this one again.
