I dropped the car in for annual service earlier in the week.

    Make: Renault
    Model: Clio
    Year: 2002
    Engine: 16V 1.2L
    Mileage: 51474(miles)

The dealer listed off a load of recommended repairs that came to over €1,600.

I think some of them may be unnecessary so I was looking for advice on what I should get done and what I should leave until next year.

I intend to keep the car for another year and then trade up so don't really want to spend over €1000 on it now.

The car is not due an NCT until Feb 2012.

    Recommended repairs (dealer supplied price):

    1. D/S/R Lamp s&f - €165

There is a crack on the Driver side lamp, price seems high and I don't see the point in getting this done.

    2. Wiper Washer pump s&f €145

Wiper washer seems to be working ok, but he says its only a temporary fix and needs replacing. I'm thinking this is something I could live without.

    3. Thermostat Housing Seal s&f €145

He is saying there is a coolant leak but I have not noticed any problems. Does this price sound reasonable?

    4. Rear Brake shoes s&f €235

I'm not sure how important this is but if its to do with the brakes it sounds like its something I should get done but I have no idea how much it should cost.

    5. Engine Mounting s&f €110

Again I'm not sure what this is, and if it is necessary to replace now and what the cost should be.

    6. 3 new tyres s&f €290

Side walls of tyres are cracked. I'm thinking I could get these for a lot less than this I will probably need to replace them (They are nearly 3 years old now).

    7. Timing Belt and Water Pump s&f €575

He says there is no sign of disrepair in the timing belt but because of the age of the car that it needs to be done. I'm hoping I can get another year out of it before getting this done as the mileage is quite low.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

It's difficult for anyone to give advice as we haven't seen the car and thus can't comment on what does or does not need to be replaced.

Your best bet is to get a second opinion on the car. Take it to a good independent garage and see what they say.

With regards to some of the parts listed (such as brakes and the lamp) you should be able to get them from any motor factor for a lot less than from the dealer.

Thanks, I'll bring it in to another place and see what they say....

    1. D/S/R Lamp s&f - €165

Pick one up much Cheaper at the breakers yard.

    2. Wiper Washer pump s&f €145

Wiper washer seems to be working ok, but he says its only a temporary fix and needs replacing. I'm thinking this is something I could live without.

Illegal to drive without it, but again, breakers yard would be far cheaper and easy enough to fit.

    3. Thermostat Housing Seal s&f €145 (get it done)

He is saying there is a coolant leak but I have not noticed any problems. Does this price sound reasonable?

Very important and I suppose maybe reasonable enough as the coolant also will be replaced.

    4. Rear Brake shoes s&f €235 (get em done)

Kinda pricey in my opinion unless the cylinders are gone too.

I'm not sure how important this is but if its to do with the brakes it sounds like its something I should get done but I have no idea how much it should cost.

    5. Engine Mounting s&f €110

not sure how much that part would be but it probably needs to be removed when doing the timing belt anyway so shouldn't be charging too much more than the cost of the part.

You'd be right but with tyres you get what you pay for.

    7. Timing Belt and Water Pump s&f €575 (get it done)

You'd probably get it done cheaper somewhere else but if its all genuine parts then that probably seems fair.
