I am considering buying a .223 in the near future and i am looking for some scope advice. I know one guy that has a Carl Zeiss on a 243, and another friend has a .204 wth a Night Force, i have told both of them that they were crazy spending big money on a scope. Now my question is wud i get away with a 300euro scope, bearing in mind that i just want to be able to shoot the Big Fat Red Boy that i see most mornings out the back of my house @ aprox, 200yards, and maybe a bit of target practice to..?????? All advice greatly accepted .

Spend as much as you can on the scope and nothing less than you pay for the rifle I reckon is the easiset way to go

Buy second hand. All my good scopes were second hand and are a great job. :D

Well if we are all honest men/ladies then we would say what BS told you to do.

BUT as we can't all afford the BIG name scopes, like myself, then go middle price range of scopes and keep far, far away from the cheap sh!te.
A few names comes to mind Burris, Bushnell, Hawke, but not their low end market scopes.

Buy secondhand if you want good value but you take your chances.

    Good advice from all above.

However a purely personal word about price for what its worth, I have mail ordered 2 scopes from the US, Kahles (My own personal preferance, nothing wrong with those mentioned above).

First 3 years ago arrived without VAT/Duty, About 1/3 of what would have payed here.

Second was last year, payed duty, but it still worked out about half of the best price I got here for the same scope.

Registered their warrenty online, no problem.

Made in Europe, Duty payed going into US, duty paid coming back, still cheaper ????????????

I have a bushnell legend 5 x 15 x 40 on my .308 it cost me aprox 350 euros and it does the job of deer stalking perfectly, although it might lack a little in low light conditions every bit as important is the mounts you use to attach scope to gun, DO NOT try to save money by using cheap ones if you it won't make the least difference how much the scope costs

+1 about the mounts. if you dont have much €€€€€ to spend on scope ild spend it on a decent second hand one rather than a new cheaper brand. if you buy the cheap scope youll end up regretting it later on and end up buying a better one anyway

good or bad brand or good or bad scope?? if its brand your on about well, its the usual ones mentioned on the different threads that you want to be going for; S&B, zeiss, bushnell (top end ones), nightforce etc etc. i have an IOR which i think is well worth a look;)
if its a particular scope you want to know about, well ild bring along someone whos into optics when your having a look at it and they should be able to say if its a good one or not. best of luck getting yourself sorted

I would just buy the best second hand scope you can afford and take your chance. I have a few top-end scopes I bought second hand and they all turned out excellent.

I bought a Bushnell (low-end) and a Simmons WTC new and neither of these would hold a candle to my second-hand purchases.

Just to let you know, I bought my good scopes off FleaBay, so it's worth a punt!
Refine your search to 'used' & 'uk only' and the category is sporting goods>hunting>sights and scopes.

    Best of luck!

    Solid-Slug,
Spend as much as you possibly can on getting the best rifle. Then put some good glass such as: Burris, Nikon, Leupold, Redfield. Later if you decide to throw down the dosh, get the best scope money can afford. Don't sacrifice the rifle for the glass.

That's what I did when I first started out. Now that I can afford the S&B, USA Optics, Zeiss, et al, I find myself still not willing to throw down the dosh for the high end scopes. For what I do a Zeiss that cost 5x the price of my Burris is just not 5x as clear, 5x better, 5x more powerful, ...

    To each his own.

You may just find that after using one of the above, you'll stick with them for life.

i would have said the opposite, spend as much as you can on a scope that is right for you, size weight, power, reticle etc and then buy the rifle with your change along with good mounts,

there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to clearly make out your target in the evening when light is fading

lots of bargains on guns at the moment so should be a lot easier to upgrade your gun down the road compared to upgrading a scope

Any new 6x24x50 scope for 150 euro will probably be crap.
The scope you are referring to is probably a leapers.
