Bike hire near Tavira/Olhao, or in Faro, Portugal

Seems the family holiday is headed here. I'm reluctant to take my bike with me as I'd need to buy a pricey bike box and the car will most likely be full anyway.

So wondering if anyone has any experience renting a good road bike in Faro, or east of Faro?

I spent a week in this area last summer. (Cabanas de Tavira) . Great area for cycling with plenty of hills near hand . There is definatley two good bikeshops in Tavira , not too sure if they do hire . They looked to be high end shops with a good range of MTB's.

Also lots of road cyclists in this area too. Most of them heading for the hills arond Monte Rei and Santa Maria , try to get a local map and you cant go wrong.

    Thanks, sounds good.

The missus told me about the accomodation she'd found, I did a bit of googling and I scored a lot of brownie points by casually suggesting we take her mother along.

    Such an unselfish act. ;)

Had a look at the rental fates in a couple of shops in Faro and am now seriously re-thinking. Might have to buy a bike box and rent a bigger car!

We took our bikes to Faro and had a great few day touring the Algarve in 2006.

There's a nice bike shop on the quayside in Tavira, but fairly pricey, there is more choice in the shops along the N125 near Albuferia, but the rental rates are very high. I'd suggest bringing your bike if you can manage it.

Take a look at the forum here for a few tips:

If you can get up into the hills north of Tavira there are some superb climbs, and views right back along the coast, it's fairly quiet up there even in summer.

The EN125 used to be one of the most dangerous roads in Eurpe but the motorway took most of the traffic form it. It can still be a bit hairy near the main towns, particularly at roundabouts and intersections. There are usually good alternative roads though.
Give all trucks a very wide berth!

    Great, thank you.

With the hassle of finding the bike shop with family in the back of the car and the rental rates, I think I'm going to bring my own.

Thankfully it's Aer Lingus we're going with, not the other crowd.

Anyone have any experience with this crowd?
Or could you suggest reasonable altnatives?
Heading to taverna with family Monday week. Bring a bike is not really an alternative.
