Spilt Petrol on Carpet

Strange problem and I think this is probably the best place to look for advice.

I'm just after spilling about a litre of petrol, with some two stroke in it, onto the carpet in house. It was from my mini moto, the fuel feed pipe to carb popped off while I was doing some stuff. Anyway it was sitting on newpaper so I think most of it was soaked up by the paper but some definitly made it to the carpet. It hasn't stained at all which is my main concern but still worried about a lingering smell or that.

I'm kinda hoping the smell will go as the petrol evaporates, I've left the windows open in the room anyway, any other advice would be appreciated.

It'll be nigh on impossible to mask the smell. Your best chance is to get as much oil out of the carpet as possible.

Salt should help soak up most of any spillage but a deep detergent wash might be needed to lift the petrol and engine oil out of the fibres.

oh and er, no naked flames ;)

A good feed of Guinness and a loose spinxter should help mask the smell

Use salt to get rid of the worst of it, combine it with non biological detergent if it's not enough.

Or try sprinkling unused coffee grounds to get rid of the smell.

Toss a match in the general area, you'll have a smell of burning masking the petrol... and you (possibly) could get those wooden floors you always wanted... :pac:

I think i have a fair bit of it up with just, kitchen roll and that, I reckon the newspaper caught most of it. Might give the coffee grounds a go a bit of googling suggested that too.

    Thanks for the help.

Also I've no wife to worry about, just a landlady.
