Canon Lens advice

Hi, i recently purchased a Canon 60D DSLR and am absolutely delighted with it, however i am unsure about the lens i am using. As much as i would love to own an L lens unfortunately budget will not allow for some time. However i currently use the standard 18-55 IS kit lens as my walkaround and am quiet happy with it. When i purchased the camera i had the option of this lens or the 17-85mm IS USM, however the latter was about 150.oo euro more and having read the reviews on DPreview i found that the results for the 17-85 were not very favourable at the wide end and most suggested that the 18-55 is optically better although with a more plastic build. As image quality is more important than build i decided on the 18-55 but now i am starting to wonder should i have forked out the extra for the 17-85USM. Has anyone here any trial of either these lenses for comparison purposes?

I went from the 18-55 to the 17-85 and the USM made a massive difference for me. The IQ of the 17-85 is very good I find when I don't shoot wide open.

The 18-55 however is still a good lens and I wouldn't dismiss it entirely. The other lens that people seem to be talking about is the Tamron 17-55 f2.8 which is not too expensive

Just out of curiosity was your 18-55 the non IS or IS version as i had an EOS1000D with the non IS and anything would have been better than that. Apart from the fast focus of the USM how would you compare IQ? The Tamron sounds good too

Is version. I like the iq and the build. Having said that my lens suffers from barrel creep

I haven't tried either lens, but after various experimentation with obsessive poring over lens reviews, and buying & selling different lenses over the years the conclusion I have come to is:

    - If the lens you have does what you need
    and
    - you are happy with the results
    then
    - just enjoy it & ignore the histograms, speeds & feeds etc that you see in reviews.

You say you are quite happy with the lens you have -good for you! Go forth & take lots of photos with it, & enjoy. At some point in the future, you may discover that there are certain situations where your particular lens has limitations that you want to overcome. If that happens, then is the time to decide!
