road tax while towing

I have to move a car that belongs to me about 10 KMs to my mechanic for some routine maintenance for the NCT.

My dad has checked and he is insured to drive it (in spite of my car currently being not insured or taxed). He is worried about getting a fine for no tax and wants to "tow it instead because then it's classed as a trailer".

I think he's making a lot of assumptions there. What should I do aside from calling on a recovery truck at god knows how much?

Legally a car must have tax & nct, if its being towed by a rope etc it must be insured in case it is involved in an accident.

It has a couple of days of NCT left and it will be insured so is my dad likely to get a fine for no tax if caught?

Are you planning to start driving it straight after the NCT? If so maybe just pay 3 months tax.
Or are you planning to sell it without tax?

If its on the road, it needs tax, towing or not. Dunno where the "classed as a trailer" thing came from.

For the sake of getting 3 months tax (depending on car) it would probably cost as much to actually rent a trailer.

That's what I've always understood and me ol' Da is not the car guy in the family. I can't convince him that he will avoid a road tax fine simply because the car is being towed.

The NCT is about to run out on Monday. It's my clean, straight '95 316i saloon with 209000 miles that we thought was destined for the scrap heap. Myself and my Dad are going halves on re-commissioning it as a spare car so I'm reluctant to tax it for a 10KM journey in case the NCT throws up something unexpected. If there is a pile of money to be spent on this car, I won't want to do it immediately.

    Fair point. €150 ish

Sounds reasonable to drive a car 10km for maintenance/NCT without tax.

The chances or running into a checkpoint are slim, and then the chances of getting an unreasonable Guard are also hopefully slim.

The chance of your opinion being given any weight is also slim.

Has he got an EB licence to tow that weight and is the tow car heavier then your car? If not he'd be in much more trouble then being stopped for a tax.

    This isnt the late 80s

I once had to be towed from waterford city to meath. Now that was unpleasent, 147 miles of hell in a rotten crock that was falling apart...

A trailer is 70 for the day, you could chance it at your risk and crash into someone and wish you trailered it. Maybe you know someone with a recovery service that will do it reasonably for you either. For the sake of 70 its just not worth it
