Well you have your dobok, you have your sparring gear, last little bit will be the head guard and gum shied and then you need to look for a tournament. I think we should all go and support you ;)

il give you a straight answer , yes , regardless of how heavy it feels you wil get use to it. I bet if you got injured after not wearing it, you would regret it afterwards. I know some clubs that spar full contact with the option of wearing head gear or not, and there have been many bad incidence.

Louise are you talking about a headguard that also has a cage/plastic visor that protects your face?

I showed up to my first sparring session last month without a gum-shield :o
The sensei insisted I wear a head-guard/shield like that instead, which of course he was right to do. I couldn't stand the thing though. The blind-spot was massive, and it spread impacts around my whole head instead of just hurting where they landed. It probably saved me a few cuts and bruises, but it annoyed me at the time!

Yeah, they make beginners in HanMooDo wear one* that is thicker but the facial part is like magneto's helmet :D it kills peripheral vision and in training I've been caught by it a few times.

*edit: a headguard, no shield on it

Louise have you checked with your instructor to see if its allowed in competition? Or maybe mention the organization that you plan on competing in and I'm sure someone on here will be able to tell you if a shield is allowed.
