Why do young "hard men" join gangs then get locked up doing life sentence by time they are 21?

Surely its manipulation at its best and the real scum are laughing at them as they are still out on the streets.

My gang had skateboards, we stuck it to overworked, under-payed security guards.
    We're all getting arthritis.

It probably goes back to pack animals who used violence to protect their territory.

When i was young (10-15), i didnt live in a great area. However there were rivalries with each area around.

Generally what would happen is we'd regularly have football matches during the summer and once a bad challenge went in it all kicked off.
At one stage the gardai had to be called but i mean we were kids it was never real violence was all handbag stuff, thats about as close to my gangland life i got.
