NCT/TAX date question

I've just NCT'd a car, and the expiry of the NCT is 22 feb 2013 now I think, the tax is just due on it too, "to commence on the first day of March 2011", "Expires on the last day of February 2011", so I'll be looking to get that taxed for a year now to expire 2/12.

Now another car the NCT is due to expire 31/5/11, the tax expired on this car the last day of December 2010, I'd like to get this tested within the 3 months, so am I right in thinking I can get it NCT'd any date after 31/2/11? At the same time, I'd also like the tax not to expire until 31/5/12, so I'm trying to time it right so it will expire in the same month as the NCT, it's just way easier to keep track of if so.

First of all, what's the situation with declaring the vehicle has been off the road since the tax expired in December? As far as I recall, I just need a form (what form?) stamped at the Garda Station? Is this form IN the Garda station, or at the tax office, or can I get it online I wonder?

Secondly, because I want to get the car NCT'd maybe at the end of February at the beginning of the 3 month period, I'll need it taxed to get to the NCT, which is a bit annoying since it'll only be 10 minutes away and in use for that morning only (if it passes), I'd be happy then to wait until may to tax it again so the NCT and tax both expire in May (2013 for NCT, 2012 for TAX, and then 2013 next tax year), but I'm thinking if I get tax in March when the 3 month period begins (well, the day after) then the minimum I can get is 3 months, which will bring the tax expiry to June, so that won't work, so I think I'll need to get it taxed in February, and then again for a year come May, that's to do things legit of course.

It's not going to be in use so I'd be happy to leave it till May without tax, other than getting the NCT passed.

Is there any kind of allowance for getting it NCT'd without tax?

See if I get it NCT'd without TAX, I'm driving without tax, but then if I wait for the right month to tax it and get the NCT done after, I may be driving without NCT. Unless I wait till May 1st to get it taxed, which will bring the expiry to 5/12 for the tax, and then I have until 31 May to get the NCT passed, which will bring the NCT expiry to 5/13 if I'm thinking right.

    Any feedback appreciated :)

You're right! You can NCT any car up to 3 months before it is due (and for the first NCT, when the car is 4 years old, you can NCT it up to 6 months before it is due)

No. Just leave it off the road until the end of May, tax it then and test it. Problem solved. You're making things way too difficult for yourself, as usual, Cormie :p

The only way to NCT an untaxed car without risking a fine for no tax is to put it on a flat bed (don't tow - it needs tax to be towed :D). Or the sneaky way is to get your mechanic to drive the car. If stopped he'd be very unlucky to be done for having no tax in my experience...

Thanks for that :) I wonder would it fit into the back of the luton transit? :D

Just to be clear, if I tax it in May, as opposed to 1st day of June, that's the best way, that will give me tax until 5/2012 & 5/2013 and allow me to get it NCT'd while still with a valid NCT if I get it done between May 1 and May 31st, I think :)

    It's not 3 months.
It's 90 days, which might make a small difference in days, depending on what months are they.

    You are thinking wrong.
If you tax it in May 2011 for a year, then tax will be valid until end of April 2012.

If you want to get it taxed to the end of May 2012 and then May 2013, you have to tax it on 1st June 2011.

    Answering your question.
If you want to do it legally there's 2 options.

    1. Tax it in March (f.e. 1st March, and you will get tax until end of May 2011). Then tax it again from 1st June 2011, to end of May 2012. You can NCT it anytime after 1st of 2nd (not sure) of March. But it makes you pay extra 3 months of tax, while you won't be really using your car.

    2. You can as well, leave it untaxed, tax it on 1st June, and go to NCT it then. Even your NCT will be expired by then, you are still legal to drive to NCT centre without valid NCT.

I don't think my head is screwed on properly this morning. You're saying, if I tax it in May, then it will be valid until 4/12, as opposed to 5/12, but if I tax the other car which the current tax disc displays 2/11, then that will expire 2/12 and not 1/12, so why does that expire the same month I tax it (2/12) but the other one will expire the month before I tax it (4/12 as opposed to 5/12)

Best do your research before claiming someone is wrong...

I wouldn't claim that someone was wrong if I wasn't sure.
    (2) A test certificate which is issued—

    (a) not more than 180 days before the first test due date, or

    (b) not more than 90 days before a test due date other than the first test due date,

continues in force until the subsequent test due date.

    Linky here!

I'm sure you'll agree, that information stated in law are superior, to info found on someone's website.

    LOL :D

Someone fukced up there and it wasn't us :D

Wonder what would happen if you'd show up in your 01/09/2007 vehicle on 01/03/2011. I bet they'd give you the 01/09/2013 cert alright :D

Just thinking, would the above be different due to the 2/12 one being currently taxed? Thinking out loud here :o or if anyone can set me straight I'd appreciate it!

    for you Esel:

    tl/dr:

updating current tax disc that expires 2/11 will give me new tax disc with 2/12 on it but getting tax in 5/11 for car which the tax expired on 12/10 will only give me a tax disc with 4/12 on it as opposed to 5/12? :pac:
