I was given a Sony vaio vgn laptop for free had a cracked screen.
I took the screen out until i can find a cheap or free one.
So i have been using a monitor to use it.All been going well.

    Today

The screen shows the sony and Phenoix logo on boot up but when it goes to Windows, it is all dark a black blue screen.
You can also press f2 for the bois menu and see that or f12 and see the menu with the start up in last known good start up etc.
But it wont boot up to windows menu icons wont even show windows start up menu.
Anyone got any ideas not a expert but like to have a go and fix this as its the best way to learn.

can you boot into safe mode?

    if not,
when you turn it on is there an option to boot a repair function?

do you have the installation disk for the operating system on it?

    When i press f8 i get this

    windows Advanced options menu
    please select a option
    safe mode
    safe mode with networking
    safe mode with control prompt

    enable boot logging
    enable vga mode
last known good confriguration (Your most recent settings)
Directory Services restore mode (Windows domain controllers only)
    Debugging mode
disable automatic restart on system faliure

    start windows normally
    reboot
    return to os choice menu

When i press safe mode its the same just goes to a black screen with a bit of light.
Same when i press last known good configuration.

Dont see a option for a boot repair
and no i have no cds for this.

I can hear the fan running and if i put a cd in you can here that spinning.

Strangely i repaired a Sony Vaio with a similar problem.

However, after confirming that the computer worked by booting from a boot disk http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and running the tests, i replaced the screen.

It was then easy to reinstall the OS as there was nothing on it that my friend wanted.

You may still have the product keys for the OS on the bottom of the laptop.

If you are in Dublin i can get you a copy of most windows OS.
