Need to make car idle revs higher

    Hi all,

I currently have a serious sh1tbox which used to run smooth until the girlfriends dad took a loan of it for afew days and must have absolutely thrashed it around because now it seems to shake and jump when its at the 600rpm it idles at.
When I start it in the morning its fine until it heats up and gets down to the 600rpm.

My question is how do I adjust the idling rpm to say 900rpm?

    Cheers

Check all leads are still connected to sparkplugs.

It's most likely something else is the issue, but if you want to adjust your idle:

Cars with a cable from the accelerator to the throttle will have an adjuster bolt.
This may or may not be reachable without basic dismantling - could be hidden under some stupid plastic chamber on top of the inlet manifold.

Newer "fly-by-wire" cars just have a signal. A guy with the right laptop gear + software can adjust up the revs. Had this done on one of her cars in the past - heavy electrical load + powersteering were cutting out the car on the odd occasion.

If you leave the car idling and it eventually cuts out (even after adjusting up the revs slightly) there is a good chance there is vacuum leak somewhere. If it's got an old 1.6 Zetec engine then I can probably guess where, after spending a good while fecking around trying to fix a bad idle last weekend...

Would you not look for the problem before adjusting the idle to cover it up.

    What model/make/year car is it?

I have a similar problem (Sorry for piggybacking OP)

my "car" ....seems to idle high....it does this irregularly.

its a 2003 Ford Fiesta Van (Car Shape) 1.8L Diesel.

I'm not in the least bit mechanical so have already popped it into my mechanic and he says he could find nothing wrong.

Mostly likely a dirty or failing sensor like the mass air flow sensor or idle air control valve. What is the make OP? someone may be able to post pics of where to find them.

more detail need make model year etc. i imagen its a map based system so shouldnt have airmass problems. a few common faults on these are coolant temp sensor, throttle body dirty vac leaks or plugs leads. tbh a compotent auto sparks would have this diagnosed within an hour. and just to note the idle cannot/should not be adjusted on a eletronic fuel injection system. also if it has a fly by wire throttle body they have to be cleaned and a tba throttle body realignment has to be carried out with a scan tool.

    hope this helps
