Ethernet wired through walls in apartment

Im staying in an apartment, UPC satellite is wired into the wall in every room. Also telephone line and i noticed there is 2 ethernet connections in each room too.

So since im getting a crappy wireless connection for Skype calls i want to run ethernet but id need a huge amount of cable and drilling in walls which is a no no.

So i have UPC broadband, my laptop connects fine directly to it as does my PC, so i tried running a wire from the modem into one of the ethernet lines in the sitting room wall, then running another line from the ethernet connection in the room to my laptop and got nothing, then tried the other Ethernet socket in the room. Tried the other ethernet connection in the sitting room and went back to the room and repeated, then tried the other room too and nothing.

So i unscrewed to check if there was wiring behind it and on both ends there was, i noticed one cable said datagig cable if that helps so it looks like the wiring is in place but im stumped why it wont work, i presume its basically just an extension running through the walls but maybe it should be cat5 cable and not this datagig type cable? Is there anything i can do to make it work, get an I.T guy in or something? Is there a way for me to check on both ends if the signal is getting through like send a charge and try and receive the charge on the other end with some tools?

If that wont work whats the best way to boost my signal, im getting 5 bars in the sitting room and 1 or 2 in the bedrooms, any help or pointers appreciated.

where are u living? some apartment blocks in dublin have been prewired for fibre to home technology by magnet broadband. it looks like your place maybe one of those buildings.

lymewood mews in northwood, santry dublin 9 is one such building

No its in Athlone, UPC is the only service you can get there for TV/broadband, these apartments are a couple of years old too so its not likely to be a new thing.

googled datagig cable and couldnt come up with anything but that might mean nothing

Datagig probably just means Gigabyte Ethernet rated cable.

If all the apartments have these RJ45 connections on the wall then it's likely that they all go back to one central point in the building. It's at that point that you'd probably need to link one point to another. It'll be locked so you'd need to ask permission but I wouldn't think there'd be a problem..

Hey, yeah that would probably make sense. I'll check it out with the landlord.

contact UPC to see if your apartment block is one of their "Fibre 2 Home" wired buildings.

the 3 main companies that did pre-wired setups in apartment blocks are magnet, upc, and smart

I have a similiar setup in my apartment with Ethernet sockets in each room. The twin socket has one point for phone and another for data. Each socket links back to a panel in my utility room. From this panel I connect cables to my UPC router thus sharing the connection to each room.

Your apartment should have a similiar panel. Although sometimes the builders would only put in the sockets and cabling but not a panel leaving it up to you to supply.

You could always ask your neighbours for help. But the way you plugged router to wall in one room and laptop in another was never going to work, physically impossible.

Your a star, thats what it seems to be, had a look and in where the boiler is is 7 cat 5 cables, there are 2 points in the 3 rooms and 2 points in the bedroom, each one is marked with spots however there is no cat5 cable for point 1, this shouldnt be a problem as i just need 1 connection.

My original understanding was the points in the sitting room was the central point and they connected to each of the rooms, obviously thats not the case and why it didnt work.

But i just want to send the internet to 1 of the rooms, so im connecting point 2 in the sitting room beside the UPC modem to point 3 which is in my bedroom, this should basically create an extension from my sitting room into the bedroom so when i connect the ethernet cable from the modem to point 2 and then connect ethernet to point 3 in the bedroom into my laptop i should get a connection. Thanks for the help and hopefully this works.

I know ideally i would have the modem in the boiler room so i could share back to all the locations but since i just need it in the sitting room and bedroom this should be enough.

    Yeah it worked:D

The cables were just left there so i had to join them myself, i guess if i wanted to i could put a hub in there and plug the other points into that and share it from there but i'm happy enough just having it running into my room for now as the wireless connection was crap. Thanks so much everyone

Hello, Does anyone know if there are any apartment blocks in Ireland where broadband is supplied through a wall socket and is included in the rental price, similar to many European countries?
