Whats the story with that steering wheel???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

When are you removing that steering wheel and gear knob?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Peavy

well the interior i was planning on going red/black it came with the car and the steering wheel is very comfortable vs the original one :) the steering is turned to right ;D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,339 ✭✭✭congo_90

remove towbar. seen a lovely two tone repaint of a mk3 dash. will try dig up a link. dont put silly big wheels on cos the gearbox will die. drop height, respray lower half black and put slight lip on front. :)

then start saving for the day you can drop a vr6 in there :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

havn't you heard? standard is the new modified :)

id be dropping the wheel and sex toy gear knob like a hot brick.

losing the tow-bar too, you might be able to flog that on donedeal.

the exhaust looks like a jap can, no really suited to the whole VAG thing, but i suppose thats down to personal taste :pac:

as was said, car needs to be slammed, maybe add a lip on the front bumper, then attack it with some polish and tyre shine

i was thinking 16" black rims and ive researched for the engine a CHIP (+8bhp) for 20E and a sports airfilter for 50e (+10bhp) i want to put in mk4 fronltights and do very light smoking on them.tinti the back window , smoke rear taillgihts , get a hood extend and change the original grill with the one with no VW logos
So far i only did inside and sound system only
i have JBL 1k wat sub Sony xPlod amp with JVC speakers at rear 500w and sony in front 200w and a Clarion FB289RBT stereo sitting in it :) id does get noticed in town centre in the evening ;D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

Best of luck with the car dude. But that chip and air filter will not get you 18 horses.

For me to ulcer about 10 bhp from my Integra I'd need to be spending quite a bit of money. Parts for 70 quid will not do that. Don't waist your money on em

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭zero19

I'd definitely change the exhaust anyway doesn't suit it

I suppose ;/ But the sound would be different with air filter ;D
Ahh wish the insurance woudnt cost as much as it does , id be having vr6 2.8l instead of a funny 1.4 ;D
ill try the chip anyway the one im thinking about reduces emission and fuel consumption
ahh i rememmber the times when petrol was around 90c for litre those where the days :)

Those chips are balls, the only thing I'd trust to 'map' my car would be a remap...and only done by somebody with experience!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

And a remap on a 59bhp golf is pointless... as would any other engine mod apart from dropping a decent engine under the bonnet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Peavy

ya i found vr6 engine for sale for 1000 euro , i dont realy know the price that should be for it, but insurance on a vr6 for me is 5000 euro and is only done by 123.ie ;D but that engine is a legend and in my opinion one of the best engines ever released in a production car

    Little update:
Just after installing a RipSpeed airfilter to avoid illegal loud noise :)
The engine sounds very evil now , Throttle respone increased and a bit of torque is added on 1-2 gears for a 1.4l engine with this airfilter managed 170km/h with a full car next upgrade a ECu remap. I know people will say whats the point?
The point isnt speed , its a long-term hobby :) all about rial and error i know it costs but hey :) better than cocaine :) The important thing is everything legal :) and the guards cant say nothing to me :)
A video will be uploaded soon with the engine sound and few pics on how the car currently looks . Now wish me luck on NCT ;D (Air filter will be changed to stock on the test day 15th february )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

If anything you're after losing power...not gaining any!

    Also...I doubt there's any point in remapping a 1.4...

Also, I'd say your 170kph was more like 150kph in real terms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Peavy

no realy it was 170 km/h ;D i know it sound unbilievable but the car is in a great condition.Id say im gaining atleast 1 the other box type airfilter was way worse than this one ;D ill make a video whenever i find motorways empty ;D I know someone selling a vr6 engine but at these petrol prices i see no point in it ;/

Just tighten it up and give it a drop. You'll see and feel far better results from suspension tweaks. As long as the filter is positioned OK in the bay you might not lose any power I suppose. Giving the paint and lenses a bit of love too would freshen it up. You'll find some oem bits for peanuts in a scrapyard.

I owned a 1.4 Mk3 golf years ago and drove it till I cracked the head in the 100k + mile zone.

Sorry to burst your bubble but they are not mappable. Single point injected engines are one of the earliest forms of fuel injection and run on a static trim based on engine vacuum on a metal flap.

Some cars with this system used to go nuts if you messed with the air filter as they cant compensate for any changes in manifold vacuum.

You have more than likely lost power or have exactly the same power with the air filter.

What your experiencing is the placebo effect from the noise.

Take it from someone who has a civic with bolt ons and a pending map. If i got 5hp with my mods id be very surprised and I already have close to two times the hp to start with.

So please don't attempt to make videos of you on the Ennis bypass trying to get 100mph out of your car. Id feel really bad if it went wrong.

If you want an idea for a good mod for your car, Fit decent breaks from a 1.8/1.6 as the breaks on that model car are really really poor.

The best suggestion anyone can give you is put the money aside for a year or two and then when insurance allows move up to a car that is better set-up from the factory.

Ya i agree with you , Dont worry i dont go speeding on ennis bypass if i do speed its most likely at 3am when there is no cars around and i know the road 100% , im thinking for a bmw 318/316 or just if im able to find a proper vr6 engine i realy do love the cra its simple vs today cars with sensors in their engines and all the computerised mechanisms , selling it would feel so bad. the only way realy to make 1.4 to go faster is to drop some weight since mk3's are realy heavy

its people like you that mean people like me have massive insurance premiums.

imagine hitting something at 100mph + in a 15 year old golf, kill yourself if you want. but if you hit me, or someone i know i would be very cross with you. accidents happen, your not invincible.

if you want to test out your car, take it to mondello.

haha i always wanted to go to a racetrack but not with a 1.4 well it was on a speedometer i dont think it would lie or maybe ? I dint realy think there was such thing as racetrack in ireland but now i do :) WHy is it so hard to bilieve that 1.4 is capable of 170km/h ? the engine is in top notch condition i kept the car clean and it was never abused so one time i decided to see whats it got i dont go off speeding ;/ i even tried it on an m at 3 in the morning ;/

Speedometers are generally not calibrated to be accurate because of the possible legal implications of a speedo reading a slower speed generally manufactures will set it to read around 10% faster. If you add larger than standard wheels into the equation the speedo will show an even higher speed again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

Put it this way...170 on my clock was actually 158 or thereabouts according to the sat nav ;)

not to mention, according to several sites on t'internet, when that car was brand spanking new, in lab/ test track conditions it was only capable of 171km/h, so to imagine that after 17 years worth of wear and tear, a halfords heat soak air filter and an ebay over fueling resistor chip that the car is still doing 170km/h is a far stretch of the imagination or truth.

edit : and 3 passengers too.

I managed to get a 1.0 Polo to (an indicated) 160kmph, I don't really think 170kmph is that much of a boast...

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

I'd a mark I Seat Leon with pretty much the same 1.4 engine, I got it to 160kph (indicated) once and it still had a bit left so I don't think 170kph (indicated) is too much a stretch to believe.

About the air filter, when I bought it it had a ripspeed filter which I changed out for for a standard air box and filter. It actually had slightly more torque noticeable at low revs with the standard filter/box, with no real noticeable difference at higher revs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Peavy

i know that 170 isnt much of a boast ;D but give it some credit its '94 ;D and its a an mk3 which are very heavy :( wish they have them made lighter ! ahh sure back in its days it was somthing nowdays everythings almost TDI and 2l with more valves and produce 100bhp + for stock ;/ i mean iv even seen a polo TDi with all letters red ;D atleast my mk3 is a bit faster than a micra , just for how long :D now i realise as long as the engine is running fine no need for a new car . I mean i could drop in a vr6 but insurance would be expensive and petrol isnt cheap :D fast cars , awsome tuning is in the movies :D

If red letters make a car faster I can only imagine what that red steering wheel does to your car!

And are you sure you car is faster than a 1.0 micra? The micra would have 6 - 7 bhp less from factory but micra k11 = about 770kg and golf mk3 = about 1150kg

Small bhp difference but big weight difference.

that is very unbelievable granted the cars are rated that as new. your wheels which I can't remember can mess with speedo
lucky to get my 16yo golf to 160 oh the shame. do a transplant and sell the 1.4 for scrap or px. the mark 3 is a great car to mod.

Ya but sure for a diesel it does matter especially TDi red coloured letters means more power each red letter adds about +5bhp its tells you that its a bit more powerfull than a normal TDI :)

your nuts man, properly nuts :D

the red letters in the 'TDi' logo indicate trim levels, like all chrome letters is poverty spec, and all red letters is top of the range.

that said, top of the range cars, generally have better engine/ box combos, so they can be used as a rough guideline, but every red letter doesnt add 5bhp :pac:

Ah they don't need more letters...Sure they already have so much torque, they can cause the earth to spin the opposite direction, thus slowing down the veyron to a crawl compared to the TDIDIDIDI!
