So why does being a patriot mean blowing things up?

    Been thinking about that today.

Why does being a patriot mean blowing things up? We've made a mess of things with absolute passion. Being Irish seems to mean destruction. Makes no odds if you've been to private school or not. Going to private school means that the whole country was raffled in one go, not the small scale whackery that previously went on.

Personally I thought this was going to be a thread about Americans.

I think Bill Hicks puts it best:
Here's what you can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defence each year, and instead spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, for ever, in peace.
    Bill Hicks

Instead of fighting over who owns what and all the bullcrap, how about everyone gets a share and we go fcuk around in space together. :D

It's usually brainwashed twits that do the blowing up, the armchair generals are usually directing things from where they are nice and safe.

I'm still confused by the opening post. Perhaps it was clearer before the clarification.

Well, for anybody with a decent dab of blood-lust, it was clear that the serial killing market was too specialist and conspicuous. Plus you ended up in jail for too long if you were caught. When you couched your acts in pseudo-revolutionary cant, you could still slaughter people, run vastly lucrative extortion and smuggling rackets in tandem; get political status in jail for blowing up children and you even got your own neat little ceremonial blazers to wear down to the local. On top of all that you then got released early for agreeing to stop an illegal murder campaign that you should never have started in the first place.

    Result, as they say.

Some people claiming to be patriots will tell you that 26+6=1, but we true republicans that the equation only balances when it's 26+6+3=1 - we need to leave room for when we take over England, Scotland and Wales.

    They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
    For a change of accent
Or the color of your shirt
    Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
    Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

    Rush - Territories

Sums up my view quite nicely.

To become an armchair general though you must spend years being a brainwashed twit. If you've spent years putting your life on the line, I think you deserve to sit on a cosy armchair and direct operations.

Right, for years a lot of Irish American money went on arms purchases, apparently, which were used back home on the auld sod. De Valera kicked off his leadership of the country with a disastrous economic war, more political than practical. And every generation since then there was an economic depression (the 30's, the 50's, the end of the 70's into the 80's). And this generation's crash caps the lot. What was different about this crash is that the cleverest guys in the country had a hand in it, the ones with the expensive private educations.
Do we have a real self-destructive streak? I vaguely recall Brian Lenihan telling us to be patriotic and commit economic hari kari. We have sold ourselves back into slavery, with barely a protest. When you are really successful, you go off and pay tax abroad.
It has not been taboo in our culture to hold the country to ransom, as an independent TD for example, to get certain local results. And rather than that being censured, it will be rewarded. Cute hoors is the term, innit.
