UTV picture quality on UPC

I've noticed over the last few months that the picture quality of UTV on UPC seems absolutely dire: very bad pixellation that creates a mushy image that looks like it was lifted off YouTube or something. None of the other channels seem as bad and, interestingly, the ad breaks on UTV don't seem to exhibit this. Anyone else had the same experience?

I used to watch Xfactor only on UTV cause the PIC used to be better, but last season, it was so "mushy" and pixelated, that I had to go to TV3 (which annoys me cause their aspect isn't fully correct alot of the time!)

Yes, the picture quality on UTV is brutal for whatever reason.

Come on UPC, please give us UTV HD or an ITV equivalent!

Same here. UTV picture has always been the weakest.

I was in my mothers the other day and she has UPC and I couldn't believe how bad the picture is on most channels, compared to Sky it's a disgrace.

I'd prefer an ITV equivalent rather than UTV.

Awful picture and the speech is out of synch with the picture. Getting seriously pi**ed off with UPC. As soon as Sky get a broadband service I am gone.

I suspect you will be with UPC for a long time so.

You can get BBC, ITV, C4, Five for free via a cheap satellite system.

Has anybody complained to UPC, and got through to a customer service rep who is knowledgeable?

Actually, you might have better luck with UTV - they respond quickly to complaints and are likely to action if viewers are deflecting to TV3.

what you might have there is a cable issue ie the cable feeding the TV may be an old one. the coax cable used nowadays is a better quality than one used years ago

I have UPC via mmds and the UTV picture is perfect.

That can be true. I find though they come out and fix it, but then within a few months it goes bad again. Also I notice it other houses with UPC too. But rarely when someone has a SKY connection. I've never notice if its one channel more than another though.

I have noticed this and never watch football on UTV because of it.

Had the Spurs game on it for a few minutes last night and the picture was atrocious ! Had to watch over to RTE for the rest of it & the commentary was terrible.

I switched back at half & full time for UTV's analysis so I would have to listen to RTE's motley crew though.....;)

I think UPC pull UTV from Freeview in Northern Ireland.
Freeview is pretty heavily compressed to begin with, upc re-encoding the video for carriage on the cable network will further reduce quality. MPEG does not like cascaded compression at broadcast bitrates.

it is brutal on UPC - agree with what the lads are saying - really shows up when watching football or anything with a dark back ground
