The Strokes have returned today and have just released their new single for free over on their website for the next 48 hours.

In my opinion, it sounds quite good. I didn't like their last album, hopefully this is a return to form.

Fecking Sony. Not viewable in my country. :( Glad to see the Strokes coming back though, they were fun. I'll try to find this on Last.fm or something.

You can listen to it on youtube.. which is what i'm doing right now. It's a head bobber. I have high hopes for the new album. I've always liked the strokes apart from the rubbish 3rd album. Some of Hammond Jnr's solos stuff was very good, Casablancas was bit hit and miss for me.

The 3rd Strokes album and Hammond's 1st album came out not too long between each other and IMO Hammond's was much superior!

I really like this, haven't heard harmonies in The Strokes aside from some old demos I have.
But then again I really liked their 3rd album and Jules' solo record. But not Albert's second album.
Little Joy was probably the best of the solo efforts.

So much for mixing things up eh? Don't get me wrong i like the strokes but this won't move them up or down in my estimation. Pretty much strokes by numbers no?

Possibly, but to be honest I don't think thats a bad thing. There's plenty of weird and wonderful music out there. There's nothing wrong with some simple rock music now and again and the Strokes do that perfectly imho.

No i agree completely. Just after a decent break i was expecting something a little different.

whats with the illusion of a worn out 'record sleeve' is it even a physical product? oh, those hip strokes giving the illusion of an old vinyl EP era either side of 1980 when this sort of thing was done better, bloody revivalists! with regards to the audio am certain like their predecessors the strokes have done this before too.. only much much better ;-

Anyone like the third album? I do. Opening track is one of their best IMO. Has few ropey numbers but it is 20 mins longer than Is This It. I find red Light and 15 minutes riveting and full of energy. I do get much repeated listens from all three albums. Looking forward to the fourth.

Nothing special at all, but I would quite like it if it came on in a bar/club I was in. Lively enough.

Decent track, the course is good, like JC's singing on it. There are times in the song though where I just feel I could be listening to any old strokes track

I think it's a good album too , the tracks you mentioned plus Ize of the World , Heart in a Cage and Juicebox are really good IMO

For some reason Juicebox and Heart in a Cage sort of annoyed me..probably my least favourite from FIOPE.
Red Light and Ize are bitchin' though.
I was wondering, as this was recorded and produced by the band at Hammond's house, maybe they'll work at a better pace. Touring and that does bring about big delays, but I'd love to hear an e.p. or something out of it now that it's a bit more independent.

    New song is crap IMO.

Love to hear them do something a bit more "raw" again. Everything since Is This It has sounded a little too over-produced for my liking.

    Try China.

The amount of blank white squares I have on Boards here is depressing

Not to refute your opinion or anything but I always find that people saying 'hopefully the album will be a return to form' or 'this tune is a return to form' is just lazy. 'Room On Fire', as brilliant an album as it is, was essentially a carbon copy of 'Is This It', whereas I always found that 'First Impressions...' demonstrated an eagerness to expand on the Strokes signature sound, not a complete overhaul as such but as Nikolai put it 'kind of like a scientific breakthrough'. I mean, FIOE, had a clutch of absolute gems, it's problem was that it was a tad long. If you could trim the fat and maybe remove 'Evening Sun', 'Fear Of Sleep', 'Killing Lies' and '15 Minutes' and you have a bonafide classic. 'Vision of Division' is possibly the most underrated song in the Strokes backcatalogue. You have these incisive, clinical guitars functioning as a 'complex weapons attack system' (as Pitchfork aptly put it) that was the perfect example of the Strokes new sound.

As for the new single, I like it. It's certainly not groundbreaking, but it sounds like it's not trying to be. A nice, zippy guitar boogie that could have slotted easily into 'Is This It' peppered with the harmonising guitar lines that was done so well on 'FIOE', nice work alright.

    Er.........

Well, just as well it's lazy, because i was able to say in one sentence essentially what you said in a tl;dr post.

Their 1st album was great, 2nd is really under rated, 3rd has bad songs, too long, they tried to change or "expand" their style... and it didn't work.

Hopefully this new album is a.... return to form ;)

If the post was too long to read, how do you know I said the same thing as you?

My genuine belief is that it's not going to be a return to form per se because I think that FIOE didn't lose that form in the first place. Sure, it had four lacklustre tunes (solely my opinion, obviously) but they were amidst songs that were on par with anything the Strokes had produced previously. The band members' individual solo projects also reminded us that the Strokes have always known how to write solid songs.

    Agree to disagree methinks?

Their form was a short album of short sharp songs, all killer no filler. Their 3rd album didnt do this. and it's not only me with this opinion.

The best songs on the album don't stand up to their previous stuff in my opinion. Perhaps Red Light and You Only Live Once...... but that's just 2.

We could agree to disagree, but the fact still remains that they changed the formula and it didnt come off

Completely true, in that definition of form then you're completely correct. My impression of form is that the Strokes have always displayed that they are capable of writing brilliant tunes, they just misplaced their album to recognise quality over quantity. Is This It was eleven songs long, Room On Fire was eleven songs long, had FIOE been eleven songs long it would be considered in a much different light.

First Impressions Of Earth would have benefited if they kept it to 10 tracks. Too much filler makes the overall album underwhelming even though there was 5/6 solid songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭ValJester

FIOE is a mess, and bar the first 3 the songs go nowhere. It's the sound of a tired band that's run out of ideas, and I'm ambivalent about the idea of a new album from a group which hasn't played together much in the last 4 years.

Well, that song sounds like an Is This It? b-side if ever there was one.Very much a "more of the same" quality to it.

    Its growing on me.
How high are the odds that the rest of the album will sound the exact same?

Not too sure about "You're so Right".

Love the riff but the song doesn't seem to go anywhere

For those who haven't heard it:

Absolutely excellent tune IMO, strange new territory for the Strokes. Bodes well for the album.

Seriously. Does anyone else think that the riff in this song sounds like Irish band The Rags? - dont know the exact song but it really reminds me of The Rags - uncanny.

Just to revise my previous opinion on "You're So Right" - I can't stop listening to it :D
