A friend has locked and lost the key for an 1981 Mercedes. He needs to move the car and cannot open it and even if he could the steering is locked. Any ideas ?? Car is pretty rough but needs to move it nevertheless

Old W123 keys get worn down very badly and well worn keys from other W123's can, if you are lucky, be used to open them. Some of aidhans keys might work if the lock is worn enough.

Alternatively you can put a strong wire hook between the door glass and the outer skin of the door and try to hook the door opening mechanism. Use a wedge of wood to make space for yourself to avoid scratching the glass.

The steering lock can be broken by force but I would not do this. Try to get new keys made up as tommyboy said or ring a keysmith who should be able to get into the car without causing too much damage.

A decent locksmith place should be able to make up a key if given the chassis number. That's the easist option assuming the locks and steering lock haven't been changed. Don't try and break the steering lock - have you seen that mechanism?

Shawnee, actually, as you're selling a W123 coupe, disregard all that. Instead, make bits of the door handle to get the door open and break the steering lock with the biggest bar you can find. Should be a handy few quid in it for you selling spares.

BTW - will be mailing; I know a lad looking for a front wing and door (though I know the coupe door is different to the saloon)

Thanks for the help boardies. Got it open eventually with a piece of strong wire which triggered the opening mechanism. Havent tackled the steering yet , but can wait to see if key turns up for that. Lots of bits in it alright but parked up for a while :p:p

Anybody have a drivers front door glass for a W123 saloon, manual windows and slight green tint ?

I have plenty of glass and complete green tinted cars :D. I thought it was just the screen that was tinted  Located Killaloe Co. Clare.
