2000 Avensis - poor radio reception

I bought a 2000 Avensis estate off a buddy recently but the radio reception is rubbish. My buddy told me he mostly listened to his ipod so it didn't bother him. He has an aftermarket aerial fitted - one of those stubby metal looking ones about 3-4inches long.

If I save a few channels on the presets they need to be reset again if I drive a few miles. Also if I press the search button it continuously searches through the whole FM range without stopping to find channels. It means that I manually have to search through each decimal of the FM band to find channels. I only really listen to FM.

I'm hoping a better aerial can fix the problem but does anyone know if it could be something else?

check to see if the aerial is plugged into the back of stereo, looks kinda like tv aerial, he might not of bothered connecting new aerial to stereo, Should be easy enough to pull stereo out

Thanks for the suggestion. Just had a look at the back of the radio (attached a pic that I took with the phone). In my limited knowledge of car radios it looks like its hooked up ok. I'm presuming the black cable on the left powers the unit while the cables on the right transmit radio signal.

Does this look ok to you?

all seems connected up all right, see if you can remove aerial itself it might nt be connected, wire on left (in pic) is aerial, while wires on right are power and speakers

Ya the aerial seems to well connected alright. I rang the guys in KC Systems in Watergrasshill so I'm gonna to drop in next week. Some previous threads on here said they're supposed to be pretty good. Hopefully it'll be a cheap fix!
