K basically i use monthly toric lenses for astigmitism from specsavers. When wearing these my eyes seem to get a bit dry and very tired feeling . They also go out of focus a bit sometimes which is very annoying for driving. Is there any better contacts that will let more oxygen through to get rid of the feeling of tiredness . Cost is not too much of an issue

If you ask your optician for a trial of contact lenses made out of silicone hydrogel, I am sure that this these would be the answer to the problems that you are experiencing.

These lenses transmit around 5 times as much oxygen to the eyes than traditional soft lenses. They also do not dehydrate and wearing them for extended periods of time can be very comfortable. In fact, some brands can be worn day AND night for up to 30 days at a time!

I used to work in an opticians who offered Laser correction, contact lenses AND glasses. (don't work there anymore. decided to change my career path)
Sometimes, suitable candidates who were considering going for Laser, but who were just not sure whether to go for it or not, were offered trials of silicone hydrogel lenses to wear continuously both day and night for a couple of weeks or so because these lenses are so good that they actually showed the wearer what it would be like to actually have the Laser procedure done!

I was the person who showed these customers how to insert and remove the lenses. Every one who had them fitted were extremely wowed by them. In fact I got my sister into wearing them also!

    Regarding correcting astigmatism,
Johnson and Johnson do a lense called "Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism" which also has the highese level of UV protection available in a soft toric contact lense. It's a 2-weekly lense (if you only wear them by day and take them out each night) However you can wear them continuously for 7 days if you wear them BOTH day and night.
J&J also do a lense called "Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism with Hydraclear" It's also a 2-weekly lense. The Hydraclear technology is a wettable agent which results in a really soft silky feel to the lenses with every blink (in other words with every blink, the lense re-wets itself)

Bausch and Lomb do a silicone hydrogel lense called "Purevision Toric" This lense was one that was really favoured by one of the opticians I worked with because not only is it super comfy and moist to wear, it is made of material that repels debris and resists protein build-up on the lense so the eye won't be succeptable to infections. It promotes healthy, white eyes. It's a monthly lense if you wear it by day only. 2-weekly if you wear it both night and day.

Ciba Vision do a silicone hydrogel lense called "Air Optix for Astigmatism" (a monthly lense if you wear them by day only). Again, a superior lenses for comfort, breathability and it also reduces deposit build-up.

The difference in all of them is of course the fit and diameter of the lenses. You are entitled to get free trials of each until you find which one suits the shape of your eye the best!

Best of luck with you quest.

thanks for the reply . Is it true that the leave in contacts are very bad for your eyes and lead to blindness in some people????? I would be very worried about any chance of that hence why i have not got laser eye surgery

Well, I've worked with quite a few opticians.
One was totally against fitting the night&day lenses to be used for extended wear. He was near retirement age and perhaps was "set in his ways" so to speak. He just couldn't get his head around how a contact lense could be worn while asleep as the eye was shut for hours on end.
Then another optician I worked with couldn't speak highly enough of these lenses for extended wear. He had been fitting them for the last 10 years and seemed to know and understand quite well, the technology and material that went into making these lenses. He basically kept stressing that due to the fact that there was NO protein build-up on the contact lenses while wearing them, that the eye remains healthy.

I understand your concern. If contact lenses are over-worn, protein build up on them can lead to, in extreme cases, infections and diminished vision. However, as before mentioned, the Purevision Torics and other brands of silicon-hydrogel contacts, tackle this problem outstandingly.
The key is to visit your optician very regularly to keep a check on the health of your eyes. These contact lenses are more expensive than the traditional soft ones however it is an investment worth making!

Re laser surgery... I can honestly say that apart from a few clients complaining of drier eyes than normal after undertaking the procedure, that all reported that it was a life-changing experience. Some who had started out with extremely bad eyesight had to get an "enhancement" procedure, i.e. had to have the procedure again after a period of time because their eyesight had regressed, but this was done free of charge and at the end of the day they came out with 20/20 vision.
Some glasses/contact lense wearers just aren't interested in going down that road (my sister for example) She feels that glasses are a part of her face and would feel naked without them!

Me, I wear glasses for close-up work and wear coloured contact lenses, with no prescription in them, sometimes when going-out, for the laugh!

By the way, not all opticians have accounts with all of the contact lense companies that I mentioned in my previous post. In other words I'm not sure if your optician in Specsavers would have trials of all of those lenses I mentioned. It might be worth shopping around?

I agree with Ms.DIVA. But your best going back to the optometrist so they can check the lenses, in relation to your vision the lenses may not be fitting correctly.

The dry eye is mainly fixed by getting lenses with a higher Dk value.

What lenses are you wearing at presesnt?
How long are you wearing your lenses for per day?

Also consider getting drops such as 'artelac single dose unit' and put them in your eyes during the day.

    Yes
You wouldn't wear a pair of socks for 30 days. Don't go wearing lenses for 30 days

    Rodin, you're too funny!

Personally speaking, after falling asleep in my coloured contact lenses after having one too many on a night out, I wouldn't recommend it at all. Let's just say that I nearly had to rent a jack-hammer to get them out! However, they were not those silicone-hydrogel lenses I spoke about earlier so I can't make an properly informed judement really about that.

I agree with you too, Jwabh, that is perhaps the first thing to tackle before considering changing the brand of lense.

By the way, I never heard of those drops before. Are they similar to "Refresh, for contact lense wearers"?
The optician who loved fitting the Proclear Torics always recommended the "Systane" drops also.

artelac are just drops which are great as artificial tears and are very gentle on the eye and the one dose units don't contain preservative. But alot of the drops are broadly similar, just make sure they are suitable for contact lenses.

I think what Johnaldinioh is referring to is corneal neovascularization, which is the growth of blood vessels into the cornea (which should be clear). But the newer silicone hydrogel lenses that rarely happens. And with older type lenses it happens to non-compliant patients. It will also be spotted in your annual contact lens check up.

And to Rodin the eye is extremely clean organ with the tears continuously cleaning the surface of the eye. No problem wearing lenses for the extended periods if enough oxygen is getting through.

    Hey guys!

Definitely wouldn't recommend the day and night lenses!

I have astigmatism in my left eye and after wearing them for a couple of days my vision deteriorated (really blurred) quite a bit and the longer I wore them the more uncomfortable they got.

I went back to specsavers after 2 weeks of wearing them and they ordered me a different set which were even worse.

I'm definitely going back to dailies (not off specsavers though) even though they're so much more expensive they're worth it in my case!!
