This one is wrecking my head any ideas?

Of all Irish Rugby International capped players, what is the most common surname????
(please note a little twist as all spellings of the surname are counted)

  • I'm guessing something like Fourie / de Villers / Steyn?

Yes, good call. We're not discussing the English cricket team.

If Worldwide surely it would have been Jones?

    Irish-??

If anyone has the time/patience to sort through this list the answer should reveal itself

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ireland_national_rugby_union_players

Moore, Smith or McCarthy would be my guess.

Most common as in most number of caps to the surname or most common as in most number of players with the surname?

Not 100% but am pretty sure that it's Murphy. Have heard it as a trivia piece in the past. According to Scrum.com there have been ten players with that surname capped for Ireland.

    • Kennedy: 8
    • Brown: 7
    • Moore: 7

    I've counted 9 Smith\Smyths also...and that's from going through all capped players...

    Based on the Q posed above...there are 11 Brown(e)'s

They're different surnames, though. That's like saying O'Sullivan and Sullivan are the same. I think the spelling has to be the same. FitzGerald/Fitzgerald is a trickier one since the spelling is the same, but the capitalisation is not.
