When I play any archived shows or podcast it plays them on what's like a browser window.the trouble is the screen is always in killing battery and I cant put it in my pocket or touching the screen stops or makes it come out so I have to start again...any sneaky way of making it play in the background like radio or music??

I can't help you with those apps as I don't use them but for podcasts you can try BeyondPod (not free but great) or Google Listen (free but not as great). With those they'll pull down the podcasts and when you play them you can turn off the screen

Yeh I get the same thing when using the BBC's "listen again" player. Because it's flash it assumes that there must be some video content playing and kills the player if you try to lock the screen. Annoying!

I think that's the only way to get today FM podcasts though. I tried to get them on Google listen but couldn't.

I get Off The Ball podcasts fine on Google listen though...

It depends. Today FMs podcasts seem to be here.

Any podcasts that have an RSS link can be added to Google Listen or BeyondPod or anything else.
The Ian Dempsey show doesn't seem to have an RSS link though so if that's the one you want you seem to be out of luck.
