Hello, I wish to start a PhD degree this year and hope to into research in coming years. However, I am wondering if lecturing to classes is a compulsory part of a PhD degree, or is it possible to do a PhD and just do research?

It depends where you go and what department you're in. It's rare to be required to teach, but it does happen. It's more common in the US. Ask the graduate admissions tutor in the department you're looking at.

It is not common for a PhD student to give lectures and it is definitely not compulsory as part of achieving your PhD, some ppl like myself get lucky and are asked to do a few hours of lecturing. It is however very common for PhDs to be asked to demonstrate lab practicals. That is my experience of UCD
