Hi, I just updated my laptops operating system to Windows 7. I have a vague recollection of someone here mentioning that its possible to watch some RTÉ channels through the built in windows media player?

Could someone give me some info on this? Do I have to buy a usb dongle, with a built in tuner to access it?

it's no bother, pick up a usb dvb-t stick on ebay for less than a tenner, just make sure it has bda drivers. install stick and drivers, don't install the supplied software. launch windows media center, and the setup guide will walk you through setting up your tv sources, tell it you have antenna source, that is it s DVB-T source not analog, it will ask you what county you are in, tell it and it will automatically scan and find the channels, and add them to the epg for you

    very easy to do

Tested on Windows 7 laptop with Windows MC.

Note your Graphics card needs to "really" support Windows 7 or HD won't work.

Thanks for the info guys, €30 is a bit steep for something I have in the living room. You absolutely have to have a tuner in the USB? No way of doing it just by downloads?

have this one, have not tested for mheg support, but works for video and epg no problem

No way of doing it with just downloads! You need the actual piece of hardware so you can connect the aerial to your laptop/computer.

The MHEG5 is built in Windows 7. The DTT stick just needs to have a BDA driver.

If you only want occasional watching go for the 11 Euro stick. I only went for more expensive one because I was building a Media system / PVR and wanted two tuners in one "stick"

    Mossym:
I can only test Graphics cards and review on XP, Ubuntu, Win2K and Server2003. I don't have a copy of Win7 for PC.

My son has a MSI "gamer" laptop with win7, and he graciously allowed me to test the MobiDTV stick on it. He was so impressed he ordered one himself the next day.

I have four models of PCI satellite card. But have not tested Satellite in Win7 MC at all. I'm told Win7MC sat support isn't as good as the DTT.

that's the reason i haven't tried the mheg5. my win7 machine uses a blackgold dvb-s2/dvb-t card. i've only used the usb stick on xp and vista laptops with dvbviewer, both of which worked fine with it. sorry my offer of a loan wasn't related to the thread title, more to allow you to compare the cheaper offering to the one you already have. chances are both are made at the same Taiwan address anyway

win 7mc sat support is just fine, just as good as dvb-t. there was an issue with itvhd support for a while, which resulted in the "gimmeitvhd" reg fix. isn't needed anymore, and all channels scan fine. i can't comment on red button services, as i've never used them on any platform, pc or STB.

What about Diseqc? (maybe you only have single feed)
    Text works on BBC?

    good points.
only have a single feed, but the support is in there, how robust it is not sure.
by text you mean teletext or subtitles?

Does that DTT stick for €11 have a BDA driver, maybe I should read up a bit about it. Id like to have a pvr capability. Is there alot of work to that?

Is the USB acting as an aerial for receiving the channels like a UHF aerial on a roof?

it does have bda. it will work fine as a pvr, you just don;t have a second tuner for watch one while recording another

(although i believe i read somewhere as all the channels are on one mux you can trick some software into recording as many as you want)

there is a small aerial with it you can use in strong signal areas, works fine for me in limerick city at work, when i go home it doesn't work, but i use an adapter to connect to my aerial in the attic, same as any tv or stb

    @Watty
During setup Win7 asks which and how many satellites you recieve. I only have astra/ EB so don't know how well Diseqc works. MHEG5 is NOT available as the coloured buttons are missing on satellite but OK on DTT. Win7 also seems to use preset transponder lists which are outdated even if it downloads the latest updates. You can manually add transponders but it is cumbersome. Once setup however it works well. It also downloads 14 day EPG for the main sat channels.

Yes, someone was saying they enabled MHEG5 Win7 on Technisat German transmission 19E and it crashes Win7.

Text MHEG5 should work on BBC on satellite in Win7, just not the Interactive video.
It does on the DVBviewer MHEG5 tests.

Almost everywhere you need a real aerial. The "rod" that is with them is poorer than €2 Rabbit Ears + loop.

picked up woodcock just fine inside a metal shed in the industrial estate in raheen, allowed me to watch the world cup every day at work, had quite a crowd gathered around my desk every time there was a goal...

So you need to have a uhf aerial on the house to get it to work?

Usually. Some places work with indoor aerial. If the window in the room faces the mast and nothing much is in between, then an indoor aerial may work. Location of aerial in the room is important.

    I'm not far from Raheen.

Indoor aerial in Kitchen works, just. In living room not at all. Raheen Industrial estate has a very clear view of mast. Nothing in between.

This has to be a typo. After reading mossym's & watty's advice pressed the button on this item from same seller just yesterday. Obviously not yet received in post. Paid £9.50 as per eBay confirmation extract:

I can confirm that this works with MediaPortal .
I have one of the cheapie DVB-T usb tuners from ebay , and because all of the channels use the same transponder frequency ( 730000 , Clermont Carn , Louth ) I can record from 5 channels at the same time , as well as watching a sixth :D

This also works with DVB-S , if channels share the same transponder frequency .
