Excessive Fuel Consumption??

Hi all, have just taken delivery of a new Grand Megane 1.5dci 110. Have the car about two weeks now and just wondering on the fuel consumption.

According to statistics it should average about 4.9L per 100km. However mine seems to be about 6.8L per 100km.

Have to admit some of my driving is city driving. I commute to work each day on motorway of about 10 miles and maybe another 3 or 4 city and the same in return. Then the rest is secondary roads to shops etc.

Just wondering if this is normal/average? Will it get better as the engine "runs in".

Not sure if this is the right forum for this.

Are you driving it like a diesel? ie keep it in the torque band, probably between 2 and 3k revs

Yeah I keep it around the 2000, car itself is driving fine, as in I dont see any problem with it. Just a bit concerned about the numbers.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I'd say the city driving and short shop runs are playing their part.

Go for a long drive on a motorway someday while only "Tickling" the accelerator pedal.
I reckon the short journies and stop start/sitting in traffic is the cause.
I doubt you will ever see what the manufacturer states.

If he has a DPF he will have to work in a routine once a month to get some fast motorway, heat inducing mileage on it anyhow.

See what it shows when your doing 120 on the motorway.

If its around 5/100km the its fine.

120 is waaaay too fast to be expecting that kind of return.

90/100kph would be a lot better speed to be aiming for in an economy run

Over 25% of your driving is urban, and over 50% is motorway, you can't expect to average 60mpg.

Motorway for me averages 5.4l/100 on my 2.0D Volvo on a flat.

I have the same car and for short trips I only average 6 to 6.5Ltr /100 km. On a long journey easily get circa 4.8 to 5.5Ltr/ 100 . Depend on what speed you drive at ! At 120kph you will be looking at the 5.5 to 6ltr + mark. I founf circa 115 kph gives me best mileage!

Thanks for the replies. On the small bit of motorway that I drive it comes up like dak says varying from 4. odd to 5 ish while travelling at 110kph.
Was on to the dealer today for a different matter and he said not to take too much notice until I have at least 2500 km on the clock as it takes a while for the engine to bed in. Still a huge improvement over my 1.6L Zafira.
