Accomadation

Yes yes there's probably a million threads based around this already but they're all scattered and I really wasn't willing to take the initiative to scour each thread for the info I needed :o

Basically, I'm hoping to be in student accomadation next year (first year) and I've been doing some research on the different places. As far as I can tell Dúnaras and Gort na Coirbe seem the most appealing. Could any of ye lovely folks give me some more info on these places? Personal experience or whatever. Or perhaps give me some other recommendations on where to look?

    Much appreciated,
    Eoin :)

Dun Aras is a twenty minute walk into college. Sounds good at first, but when it's raining? Also, some people including myself have had a good deal of difficulty getting deposits back from them in a reasonable timeframe (that is, getting it back in less than two months after moving out). There was also some trouble with travellers and kids, especially if you're on the ground floor.

Though this was a few years ago, so it might have changed.

Dunaras do have a shuttle bus now, but I've no idea what its schedule is - I've only noticed it coming and going from the campus. That said, Dunaras is miles from anything of interest and I'd say it would take you more than 20 minutes to walk in (maybe 20 mins to get to the campus, but then to get where you're going add another few minutes).

Gort is a safe bet imho. Good accomodation and you're close to everything. There's a Dunnes across the road and a 24 hours Tesco only a little further away. Plus there's a cinema nearby and you're only about a 15 minute walk from the city centre. It's only about a 10-15 minute walk to the college, so it's close enough.

I wish I were a mod. There are SO many accommodation threads for NUIG. I've written in most of them but I'm tired of it now.

Best bet if you know a few people going to Galway get a house together. Much cheaper than the rip of student places and you will meet people else where. You might also get to sleep at night.

Obviously don't tell the landlord that you are first years or you'll be out.

I was in a rush to post the thread, thus the lack of spell check

Thanks for that. I'll look further into Gort so :)

I rang the Gort blokes today and they said that they were all booked up but if i sent in my application they would put me on the waiting list, could anyone tell me if this bodes well for my chances of getting it or should i give up hope?

Also on the application where it stated that i should put down what room type i wanted (single, twin, etc.) i only put down single, no other option. Has that lowered my chances further?

    Cheers for any help.

I just booked corrib village, I'm delighted I got the room I wanted, double ensuite, but I'm heading to Galway from Waterford so I thought corrib village would be the best place to book to make friends and the likes. where have others going into first year in September 2011 booked? :)
I'm hoping to get Psychology but if not, Arts and continue psychology for the 3/4 years :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Just because you're a student doesn't mean you have to stay in student accommodation. Get a room in a real house for the same price and vastly superior living standard.

If you don't want to share a twin room, put that last and fill up the remaining spaces with your first preference at the top. It helps if you put more than one choice, as when the cao offers come out there may be spaces. If you've already sent in the applicaction, ring and ask if you can send an email to add more choices. :)
