Roxio, Nero, Ashampoo, etc., etc. I'm using Windows XP and finding it almost impossible to access a DVD programme that doesn't require a degree in computer science to create a DVD. I transferred VHS taped material onto the computer using Lidl's converter kit. It saves the files in MPG, which only seem to play on computers. I need to create files that will play on regular dvd players. Are AVI files the most common format? What format should I be aiming for? Is MPG the same thing as MPEG? HELLLLLLLP!!

mpg files are MPEG video files

AVI is a video container, Most dvd players will play AVI files but they need a decoder to do so, this is were DIVX comes into play, if your DVD player is new enough it will have DIVX playback support and usually tell you on the player itself.

If you want your movie to play on ALL dvd players you can convert your MPG to VOB filetype, VOB files are one of the core files found on DVD-Video discs and contains multiplexed Dolby Digital audio (normally AC3 format) and MPEG-2 video, there are many video convertors out there that allow you to do this, i will list some for you.

Use imgburn program to burn dvds or cds, you can buy a dvd player with usb port , reads avi or divxx files 50 euro approx harvey norman ,powercity etc
buy a usb key 2 or 4 gigabyte, put the usb key in the usb port ,browse to files with the remote ,click play.It SHOULD HAVE a divxx or avi logo on the box,or the dvd unit itself.I FIND AVI , files easy to play or copy or transfer,ie they are not too large.
if you get one with a usb port, you may never need to burn cds, if you are just watching a ;program once or twice.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The project I've set myself involves burning DVDs to send to family and friends. I need to create disks that will play on most DVD players, so I chose DVD Flick, as it seems to be user-friendly. Will report on progress.

I've been using Roxio DVD burning software for almost 20 years. I've upgraded over the years. in the lat 2 days I've upgraded to the latest versn of the software. It's causing me untold trouble. I haven't been able to create a .ISO file with the software for burning onto a DVD.

I create an MPG file, About 400mb. Then, in the software I click on 'Create DVD'. I go through the process. And, in the end, when I burn the file onto a DVD and look at the DVD the file is broken up into segments. That never happened in previous versions of the software

    Anyone got any suggestions?

    Thanks

I didn't think an .iso was playable on DVD players. Its usually .vob isn't it. (That's assuming we are talking about video and not data)
