    Hi All,

I am trying to get a friend of mine more into the NFL as a sport rather than a commercial driven media scrum.

Does anyone on here want to give s shot at calling a play and explaining how it is to progress? Either defensive schemes or offensive.
Might be good for a few of the coaches on here to help educate the masses?

EG a play with a bunched 3 WR set or a CB blitz.

    Cheers.

I always used Madden to teach somebody about the different plays in a game because you can pick the plays you want to explain, replay it, pause it and react to it.

My mate used madden to teach me, First off you learn the play 's formations and the more importantly all the players names, how good there a meant to be etc. Play 2 players co-op as well get him to be WR or RB and he'll slowly get used to playbooks and learn how the defense in particular runs

This is from a book called "Take your Eyes off the Ball" which explains play calling amongst other things.

In this play, the team is lining up in 21 personnel formation (the 2 means there are 2 running backs, the 1 means 1 tight end and by default there'll be 2 wide receivers). The play: 'I Weak Right Boot Right 819' means the following

I - tells the running back he's to stand in the I formation (i.e. 6.5 yards directly behind the quarterback)
Weak - means the fullback's going to line up on the on the weak side (i.e. the side where the tight end isn't.
Right - the TE is on the right side of the OL.
Boot Right - gives the QB the option of running a bootleg.
819 - indicates the routes the receivers are to run. There are 9 routes a receiver can take. In this case the 8 is a 'post' route which is deep and then a change in direction, 1 means a 'quick out' which is the short little route a TE will take and 9 is 'fly' route which is deep and straight, kind of like a Randy Moss of old run!

Hey dude, cheers for that. Its like telling a story 5 different ways.

Anyone on defense know the 20-20 hindsight play to call?

Tampa Bay cover 2 would stop most of that, the TE would have to be kept an eye on though, the OLB could spy on him, meaning he'd only drop based on what route the TE runs.

The anatomy of a play clips on NFL.com might interest him, to show what they're planning to do and the various options facing them.
